EOU Softball Splits Doubleheader at British Columbia

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Eastern Oregon's softball team won its third game of the season on Friday, splitting the first doubleheader with the University of British Columbia, falling 14-5 before winning 6-4 in game two in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

GAME 1 | British Columbia 14, Eastern Oregon 5 (F/5)

The Mountaineers (3-17, 1-6 CCC) stumbled in game one, falling 14-5 against British Columbia in five innings. EOU came out swinging the bats, scoring at least one run in the first three innings of the game. In the first inning, freshman Haley Ebner singled to left center, scoring senior Rayne Spencer from third. In the very next at bat, senior Hannah Rothwell singled to right field, scoring pinch runner Julie Hernandez. This allowed EOU to put the pressure on British Columbia with a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Ebner and Rothwell each finished the game batting 1-for-2 with an RBI.

In response to EOU's two-run inning, BCU responded scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, as well as scoring three runs in the second inning. EOU responded in the second, scoring one run off of a sacrifice fly from Spencer.

In the third inning, with the bases loaded, freshman Brianna Zweygardt drew a walk to score freshman Shelby Starr, who joined the team after basketball season. A batter later, junior Jordan Shaw drew another walk, scoring Rothwell. This would bring EOU within two runs of the lead that the Thunderbirds secured.

In the bottom of the fourth, British Columbia had an outburst of runs, scoring a total of seven, forcing the game to end because of the 8-run rule. Eastern Oregon would fall 14-5 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Game 2 | Eastern Oregon 6, British Columbia 4

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mountaineers began the same way they did in game one with two runs in the first innng.

In the first, the Blue and Gold had the bases loaded with Rothwell coming to the plate. Rothwell drew a walk to score the first run of the game. Junior Jordan Henley then singled to left field, scoring senior Shevan DeFreitas.

In the top of the second inning, with the bases loaded for the second time, Ebner singled down the line, scoring Rayne Spencer. In the next at bat, Rothwell walked, loading the bases once again. Henley then came to the plate, driving the ball down the right field line to score Ebner and senior Madison Barr. Eastern Oregon led 5-1 after two innings.

The Mountaineers were not done yet. In the top of the third inning, Shaw smacked her first career home run, a solo shot over the right field wall to extend the Mounties' lead to 6-1.

Henley had a strong game, finishing 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Barr went 3-for-5 with two runs scored to lead the offense.

Junior pitcher Jessica Lambert made the start, earning her first victory of the season. Lambert pitched six strong innings, limiting the Thunderbirds to just two runs over the first six frames. In the seventh, UBC scored two runs off Lambert to cut the deficit to two runs. However, senior Lauren Spencer entered in relief and was able to secure the save with one inning of work. Lambert struck out two batters while Spencer struck out the final batter of the game with the bases loaded to secure the victory.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Saturday, facing the Thunderbirds at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
