Eastern Oregon Splits Double-Header at No. 3 Southern Oregon

ASHLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team won its first conference game of the season on Friday, splitting the first two games of the series at No. 3 Southern Oregon, falling 6-3 before winning 5-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Game 1 |  No. 3 Southern Oregon 6 vs. (RV) Eastern Oregon 3

The Mountaineers (2-10, 1-1 CCC) looked to jump out ahead early in the first CCC game of the year, but the No. 3 Raiders beat them to the punch, scoring one run in the first inning and then going on to add two more runs in the third inning to grab an early 3-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Mounties responded with three runs of their own to tie the score. Freshman Haley Ebner started the inning off by drawing a walk, followed by junior Jordan Henley who then reached base due to a fielding error. Senior Hannah Rothwell then came to the plate, hitting a double to center scoring both Ebner and Henley to bring the Mountaineers within one run. Senior Madison Barr then singled to left scoring Rothwell, tying the game up 3-3.

Later in the fourth inning, the Raiders reclaimed the lead with a run. Southern would go onto score two more runs in the sixth, handing the Mountaineers their first loss in conference play this season by a 6-3 final.

The Mountaineers recorded four hits throughout the contest with Barr going 2-for-3 with one RBI and Rothwell finishing with 1-for-3, tallying two RBI's. Sophomore Amanda Smith made the start, pitching all six innings while allowing four earned runs.

Game 2 | (RV) Eastern Oregon 5 vs. No. 3 Southern Oregon 1

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Mountaineers came out swinging with the hot bats. In the first inning with the bases loaded, Rothwell drew a walk to bring home senior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas for the first run of the game. This wouldn't be the only time the bases were loaded in the Mountaineers favor, as they would go onto load the bases two more times in the game.

In the third inning, DeFreitas singled to center, followed by a double to center by Ebner to put runners in scoring position. Henley then drew another walk, loading the bases yet again. Junior Ashley Kelly followed with a single to center, scoring DeFreitas to extend EOU's lead to 2-0.

The fourth inning for the Mountaineers helped them distance themselves from Southern Oregon for the rest of the game. Ebner started the scoring with a single to center, scoring Madison Parker who reached on base by a hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded for the third time in the game, Henley singled to center, scoring senior Rayne Spencer. Kelly came up once again in a big spot, drawing a walk that pushed the lead to five runs. The Raiders would respond later that inning scoring their only run of the game, but the five runs was enough for starting pitcher Ashton Kazmierski

Ashton Kazmierski led the Blue and Gold with a dominant start, throwing a complete game while only allowing six hits and one earned run. The start was the best of the early season for Kazmierski, who limited damage against one of the top offenses in the CCC. Entering the weekend, the Raiders were hitting .378 and averaged over seven runs per game. Kazmierski pitched to her defense with 12 ground ball outs in the game.

Ebner led the way in hitting for the Blue and Gold in game two, finishing 2-for-2 with one RBI and two walks, while Kelly went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI's and one walk. DeFreitas also went 2-for-3, drawing one of EOU's seven walks in the game.

The Mountaineers will stay in Ashland overnight to play another double-header against No. 3 SOU on Saturday. The CCC finale of the series is scheduled for 11 a.m., while the final non-conference game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
