Mounties Slip in Final 2 Games of Cavalier Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball dropped the last two games of the Cavalier Classic, falling 10-2 to Central Washington and 6-2 to Western Washington on Saturday.

GAME 1 | Central Washington 10, (RV) Eastern Oregon 2 (F/5)

The Mountaineers (1-9) jumped out to the first lead of the game in the top of the second inning as junior Jordan Henley scored on a CWU error. The Mounties were unable to score any more runs in the inning, leaving the bases loaded.

The Wildcats answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. In the top of the third, senior Hannah Rothwell belted a solo home run, her first of the year, to tie the score 2-2,

From there it was all Central Washington, who scored eight unanswered runs in the third and fourth innings. EOU was held scoreless over the next two innings, with the game ending after five innings due to the run-rule.

The Mountaineers tallied five hits while the Wildcats posted 10. EOU drew three walks, while striking out just four times.

GAME 2 | Western Washington 6, (RV) Eastern Oregon 2

The Blue and Gold were held to just three hits in the loss, with one of those coming off the bat of junior Ashley Kelly. Down 2-0 in the second, Kelly tripled to score Henley and Rothwell.

Those were the only runs the could score, however, as the Vikings reclaimed the lead in the third with three runs. They tacked on one more in the fifth to take the game 6-2.

Junior Ashton Kazmierski pitched a complete game, striking out three batters over six innings with five earned runs allowed.

The Mountaineers will next begin Cascade Collegiate Conference play, visiting rival Southern Oregon on March 1 and 2 in Ashland.
