Eastern Oregon Falls in First Two Games of Cavalier Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team dropped its first two games of the Cavalier Classic on Friday, 4-3 in nine innings against Western Washington and 9-1 vs. Concordia.

Game 1 | Western Washington 4, (RV) Eastern Oregon 3

The Mountaineers (1-6) fell to Western Washington in an extra inning thriller in the first game of the day. EOU tallied nine hits, one of which was a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, while holding the Vikings to just five hits. However, the Mounties were unable to come up the big hit to break the game open.

In the fourth inning, EOU scored their first run as sophomore Madison Parker hit a single to left center, then came home on a double to left center by senior Shevan Defreitas. Throughout the game, sophomore pitcher Amanda Smith kept the Vikings under control, holding a no-hitter through three full innings. She went on to finish with a complete game tallying nine strikeouts, zero walks, and only 2 earned runs. Smith's performance was very strong overall, with the only two runs scoring through seven innings after an error, followed by a home run.

In the bottom of the fourth Western Washington's Emily Benson responded with a two-run home run, giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead over EOU. Two innings later, the Mountaineers' freshman infielder Haley Ebner tied the game up with a solo home run to center field.

The Mountaineers couldn't find another way to score and neither could the Vikings, sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the ninth, junior Jordan Henley singled to left, scoring senior Sarah Bonner to give EOU the lead 3-2. During the bottom of the inning, Benson grounded out to second scoring the tying run for the Vikings. Western Washington's Riley Wales the singled up the middle, scoring the winning run and handing the Mounties their sixth loss of the season.

Game 2 | Concordia 9, (RV) Eastern Oregon 1

In the second game of the day, the Mountaineers were defeated by Concordia in five innings due to the run rule enforcement. During the second inning, Concordia came out with hot bats, scoring a total of seven runs. In the top of the third, EOU looked to eliminate the deficit as senior Rayne Spencer walked, then crossed home plate on a single to the shortstop by DeFreitas. The Mounties were unable to score anymore however, finishing with three hits.

Eastern Oregon continued to fight, but Concordia's bats were too hot. The Cavaliers would go onto score two more runs, one in the third inning and another in the fifth inning, forcing the game to end by the eight-run rule.

The Mountaineers will look to bounce back in the final two games of the Cavalier Classic against Central Washington and Western Washington on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
