EOU Men’s Basketball Downed 101-91 by Whitman

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon men's basketball team battled one of the toughest NCAA Division III programs in Whitman College, falling 101-91 on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.

With one of the most dynamic offenses, the Blues were able to stay out ahead of the Mountaineers (6-4) for most the night and the entire second half after a 58-41 lead through 20 minutes. EOU attempted a second half comeback, but the deficit was too large as they fell by 10 points.

The Blues came out of the gates with white hot shooting, making 61 percent of their field goals and going 9-for-15 from behind the arc in the first half, putting EOU in a deep hole. The Mountaineer offense was effective, but couldn't quite keep up with Whitman as they hit just 9-of-28 three-pointer attempts.

EOU's three-headed scoring attack of junior Max McCullough and seniors Landon Jones & Jarek Schetzle had big games offensively. McCullough posted 26 points, six rebounds and four assists, Jones had 21 points and six boards as he shot 10-for-14, while Schetzle finished with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Kobi Gardea added six points and 10 assists.

Whitman's depth of scoring made it difficult for the EOU defense to get consistent stops. Six players for the Blues had at least 10 points, led by Brian Warinner with 16 off the bench. Darne Duckett, Andrew Vickers and Nikola Trifunovic each had 14 points.

The Mountaineers will finish the weekend at home with another Northwest Conference opponent in Pacific University. The Mountaineers defeated Pacific 132-125 in overtime in the previous matchup on Nov. 15 in Forest Grove.
