EOU Football Closes Road Schedule with 27-17 Win at Rocky Mountain

BILLINGS, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon football team finished its slate of road games with a big 27-17 win at Rocky Mountain College on Saturday, ending a three-game losing streak.

The Mountaineers (3-7, 3-6 Frontier) used an 11-0 advantage in the fourth quarter to defeat the Battlin' Bears (3-7, 2-7 Frontier) on their senior day.

The Blue and Gold took the lead for good with 8:10 to play in the fourth quarter as senior running back Victor Dias scored on a one-yard run, capping a nine play, 61-yard drive. Quarterback Kai Quinn hit receiver Tanner Zenke for the two-point conversion to give EOU a 24-17 lead.

Senior defensive back Haziel Ledezma recorded his second interception of the afternoon as the Bears drove for the tying score. This gave the Mountie offense the chance to run valuable clock down and eventually kick a 35-yard field goal by Jaiden Machuca to essentially ice the game 27-17 with under a minute to play.

The Mountaineer defense came through with some big plays throughout the game that included two interceptions by Ledezma, a fumble recovery and a safety in the first quarter.

Special teams played a key role for the Mounties in the game. After the Bears took the opening drive for a touchdown, the EOU offense was unable to answer. However, punter Zachary Cahill pinned Rocky Mountain at their own one yard line on a beautifully placed punt. One play later, the EOU defense made a tackle in the end zone for a safety.

The Mounties received the kick after the safety and used the momentum gained by the special teams and defensive units to take the lead 9-7 on a seven play, 5-yard drive, finished by Dias' first one-yard touchdown run.

Quinn had the team's other touchdown, also scored on a one-yard run with 4:52 to play in the third, which gave the Mounties a 16-10 lead at the time. A late third quarter score by the Battlin' Bears made it 17-16 after three quarters for RMC.

Dias finished with two touchdowns and 67 rushing yards on 20 carries. Quinn went 13-for-28 passing for 126 yards and another 71 yards on the ground with a touchdown.

Defensively, Sage DeLong had seven tackles including one for loss. Chase Van Wyck had five tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. Alec Cranford had three tackles, two for loss and another sack. Ledezma's two interceptions proved to be key plays for the EOU defense.
