Mountaineers Finish Season with Epic 28-26 Win Over Carroll on Senior Day

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In similar fashion to a 41-34 overtime win over Carroll College on Senior Day in 2017, the Eastern Oregon football team won another nail biter against the Saints on this years' Senior Day, 28-26 on Saturday afternoon at Community Stadium.

Honoring 15 seniors who were playing in their final games on Saturday, EOU looked to send them off with a victory to end their careers. The Mounties (4-7, 4-6 Frontier) did just that, making the final big play with a stop on the No. 22 Saints' (6-4, 6-4 Frontier) game-tying two-point conversion attempt with just eight seconds left.

The fourth quarter was full of big stops from the EOU defense and an impressive final drive by the offense. Up 21-20, the Saints drove down the field efficiently to get to first and goal from the two-yard line. The defense stuffed the next two running plays to push Carroll back a yard. On third down, Saints quarterback Devin Bridgewater scrambled to his right and had an open lane to the end zone, but his knee touched the ground before the ball crossed the goal line, bringing up fourth and goal from the half-yard line.

After first bringing out the field goal unit and taking a timeout, Carroll returned its offense to the field and the Mountaineer defense came up with another huge stop on fourth down with a swarm of tacklers on the ball carrier including senior Eric Prom and defensive end Sage DeLong.

Getting the ball at its own one-yard line, the offense wasted little time with a 33-yard strike from quarterback Kai Quinn to receiver Saige Wilkerson. Quinn later hit receiver Tannerr Zenke for a 42-yard strike down the left sideline. Quinn finished off the 99-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown throw to Wilkerson to go up 28-20 with 3:06 to play.

Carroll went down the field and got back inside the red zone quickly with a chance to tie the score. On a fourth and goal play from EOU's 12, Bridgewater hit Joe Farris for a crazy touchdown right at the goal line with eight seconds to play. This brought up the play of the game, when Bridgewater rolled to his right but could not find an open receiver as his pass fell incomplete short of the goal line.

EOU recovered the ensuing onside kick by Connor Falk, and senior running back Victor Dias got the final snap of the game, kneeling for the victory.

The Mounties outscored Carroll 14-6 in the fourth quarter, the second-straight game where EOU has won the fourth quarter battle. Head coach Tim Camp was aggressive all day, calling an onside kick, fake punt and multiple fourth down conversion attempts. On a key fourth and one in the fourth quarter, Kaler Moore found a whole to pick up the first down and then found himself with no one in front of him, scoring a 34-yard run.

Moore had two touchdowns on the day, including a one-yard run in the second quarter. Falk had the team's first touchdown, catching an 18-yard pass from Quinn in the first quarter.

Overall, Quinn finished 23-for-39 for 290 yards with two touchdown passes. Zenke had five catches for 121 yards while Wilkerson had five for 69 yards and a TD catch.

On defense, Prom paced the team with 10 tackles and nine solo tackles. Linebacker Chase Van Qyck had nine tackles, including 2.5 for loss and one sack. Zackary Jacobs and senior Isaiah Cranford each had eight tackles while seniors Austin Castro, Eli Teuteu and Jacob Shults each finished with six.

The Mounties finished overall with 340 yards, with 290 through the air. Carroll had 393 yards, but the difference was the big stop at the goal line by the EOU defense midway through the fourth quarter.

Prior to the game, EOU honored its 15 seniors in Prom, Cranford, Castro, Dias, Teuteu, Shults, Derrick Fontenot, Haziel Ledezma, Gunnar Blix, Peter Manville, Brennan Pope, Alec Cranford, Garrett Yunker, Taylor Vaandering and Luis Cardenas.

While the season did not go the way EOU hoped, the team finished with wins in its last two games, including over a top-25 opponent, and lost by just one possession to No. 6 and undefeated College of Idaho the week prior on Nov. 2. The Mountaineers will use that momentum to build on for the offseason and 2020.
