Women’s Basketball Slips in Nail-Biter, 70-69 at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. – The No. 9 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team suffered a tough one-point loss on Friday night on the road, falling to Whitworth 70-69 in the final seconds.

With under three minutes to play, the Mountaineers (5-3) led by seven points 65-58 after a layup by sophomore Beverly Slater. The Pirates came storming back, however, with two three pointers and an and-one play that tied the score 67-67 with 36 seconds to play.

Senior Madison Crews reclaimed the EOU lead 69-67 with a layup on the next possession. Whitworth retied the score with 20 seconds. After the Mounties came up empty, Whitworth was able to take a one-point lead on a free throw with two seconds left. EOU's last second three-pointer was no good to give the Pirates the win.

Whitworth's biggest advantage of the night came at the free throw line, where they shot 15-for-17 while EOU was 5-for-10. Both teams struggled from behind the arc while the Mounties were more efficient from the floor at 46 percent.

Slater led the team with 14 points and 12 rebounds for another double-double for the sophomore. Junior Jillian Albright also had 14 points, with nine boards while shooting 7-for-8 from the floor. Senior Emma Logan had nine points and 10 rebounds and Crews had eight points and five boards.

The Mountaineers will next play after Thanksgiving at the Lady Yote Classic in Caldwell, Idaho, facing Linfield on Friday and Carroll on Saturday.
