Football Falls Just Short of Upset in 24-17 Loss to No. 6 Yotes

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon football team nearly pulled off an upset of No. 6 College of Idaho, but ultimately fell 24-17 on Saturday afternoon at Community Stadium.

The Coyotes (8-0, 8-0 Frontier) used a 17-3 advantage in the second half to escape La Grande with a still undefeated record. C of I dominated possession of the ball, running 75 plays to EOU's 49 while maintaining possession for nearly 40 minutes. The Yotes continued to chip away with the ground game and keep the Mountaineer defense on the field for long stretches.

The Mountie (2-8, 2-7 Frontier) offense had some quick strike scores early that gave the team momentum through the first half. EOU scored the first points of the game on a one-yard Victor Dias touchdown run, capping a five-play, 39 yard drive.

After the Yotes tied the score late in the second quarter 7-7, the Mounties answered immediately. Quarterback Kai Quinn found wide receiver Cade Reed across the middle and Reed did the rest as he hit an extra gear and outran the entire Yote defense for a 95-yard catch and run. The touchdown reception is the second longest in program history, only behind a 97-yard touchdown pass by Quinn and former EOU All-American receiver Brenden Kelly.

The Mounties went into the halftime locker room with a 14-7 lead and were to receive the kick to start the second half.

After a quick three-and-out, however, C of I took over at their own 42-yard line an made fast work to get in the end zone on a 21-yard run by Nick Calzaretta.

Another EOU punt setup a long 9 minute, 15 second drive by the Yotes that spanned between the third and fourth quarter as C of I ran 17 plays for 86 yards. The drive ended with a 22-yard field goal that gave the Yotes a 17-14 lead.

The Mounties once again stalled on their next drive and C of I capitalized with a touchdown on a 30-yard touchdown pass by Darius Peterson to Hunter Juarez with 11:05 to play.

Later in the fourth, the Mountaineers drove 64 yards in less than two minutes, ending the drive on a 32-yard field goal by Jaiden Machuca to make it 24-17.

EOU went for an onside kick that was recovered by the Yotes with 2:28 to play. The Mountie defense stepped up to force a three-and-out, giving the offense the ball with 44 seconds at their own 22.

Quinn was able to complete one pass to Dias for 20 yards to the 37, but the Mounties would get no further as a couple deep chances narrowly fell incomplete.

EOU finished with 295 total yards but averaged more per play (6.0) than the Yotes (5.6) despite C of I finishing with 423 total yards.

Quinn finished with 250 yards passing and a touchdown. Reed had 135 receiving yards on two receptions, while tight end Connor Falk finished with three catches for 53 yards.

On defense, linebacker Isaiah Cranford had 12 tackles. Safety Haziel Ledezma and linebacker Solo Taylor had nine tackles apiece. Defensive end Sage DeLong recorded a sack, two tackles for loss and eight tackles.

The Mountaineers head on the road for the final time this season, visiting Rocky Mountain on Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. Mountain time in Billings, Mont.
