Men’s Soccer Downed 2-1 in CCC Finals by Corban, Still Qualify for Nationals

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon men's soccer team looked to continue their historic run deep into the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, presented by U.S. Bank, but fell in a tough contest 2-1 to conference champions and undefeated Corban on Friday afternoon.

Despite the loss, Eastern Oregon still qualified for the NAIA Championships by receiving the conference's second automatic qualifier, the first time in EOU history. The team will find out who they are playing on Monday at 10 a.m. Pacific time on the NAIA selection show.

Corban controlled the pace early in the match on Friday and took the lead 20 minutes in. The Warriors got their chance when they counter-attacked off an EOU corner, driving down the field and finding Charles Cleyton who put it low, past keeper Max Rose.

Trailing by one goal at the break, EOU came into the second half fighting began to control the pace and create chances.

However, on their first chance of the half, Corban doubled their lead on a messy scramble in the box.

This didn't dampen the spirits of the Mountaineers who kept pushing for their first of the match. Just minutes later, they found the back of the net. Senior Captain Jorge Chavez used great vision and kicked a ball over the Warrior defense. The ball skipped over CCC Defender of the Year Allando Brown, where sophomore Felipe Madero was there to flick the ball beyond the keeper to bring the score to 2-1.

The Mounties were putting a lot of pressure on the Corban defense, staying relentless on the attack. Junior Erik Mattice almost clinched the equalizer when he took a shot off a short corner, but it went just wide.

Despite copious amounts of pressure, EOU was unable to find the equalizer and Corban finished with the tournament championship.

EOU led the shot count 10-8 with six shots on goal. Mattice led both teams in shots with four, closely followed by Madero with three.

Warrior keeper Justin Keegan denied the Mountaineers several times throughout the match, finishing with five saves. Rose tallied two saves.

The Mountaineers will next get set to compete at the national tournament for the first time in program history. The team will find out its first round opponent and destination on Monday at 10 a.m. on the NAIA Selection Show. EOU will host a watch party for the team in the booster room of Quinn Coliseum.
