Men’s Soccer's Historic Season Ends in 2-0 Loss to Baker

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. - The Eastern Oregon men's soccer team looked to continue its historic season in the opening round of the NAIA Championships, but in cold and wet conditions, the Wildcats defeated the Mountaineers 2-0 Friday afternoon in Kansas.

The opening 45 minutes proved to have chances for both sides, with the Mounties (9-10-4), pulling ahead in shots on goal at 4-2.

Eastern narrowly escaped conceding a goal at the 20th minute mark. Baker's (12-6-3) key forward Lucas Jacobs broke through the EOU defense on a threatening run and created an opportunity inside the six yard box, but was unlucky to steal a goal early.

EOU had several chances of their own, a few coming from Erik Mattice's free kicks, but the team was unable to put the ball in the back of the net. The junior led both teams in shots, with four.

Baker capitalized early in the second half, taking only two minutes to score. The goal came from a set piece as a corner was whipped into the box and Oscar Alegria had a goal line clearance to keep the ball out. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as the rebound was put into the goal by Massimo Salvoni.

Exploiting the Mountaineers' weakness on set pieces, the Wildcats doubled the lead off another corner. This time it was played in low across the face of the goal, with Jordan Alonge getting on the end of it for the second goal.

Down 2-0 with still plenty of time left on the clock, EOU kept pushing, looking for their first goal at the national tournament. Chances came for forwards Elvis Pavon and Alexander Zuluaga, however both chances just missed the goal.

Max Rose was and has been an integral member to the Mountaineer defense this season and he did not shy away in the program's first national tournament appearance. Despite conceding two goals, his presence in net was dominant. The sophomore came up big across the 90 minutes, especially in the second half, denying Baker point blank shots on several occasions, including a great diving foot save. He finished the match with six crucial saves, keeping the Wildcats to two goals.

Despite the loss, the Eastern Oregon men's soccer team has a lot to be proud of this season. After a shaky start, they made history in two different categories. It was the first time in program history that the team made the final of the conference tournament and the first time qualifying for the national tournament. They will look to build on the team's success the last two years heading into 2020.
