No. 3 Mountaineer Volleyball Takes Down Evergreen in 3 Sets

OLYMPIA, Wash. - It was another solid night for the No. 3 Eastern Oregon University volleyball team as they swept The Evergreen State College (11-15, 9-8 CCC) for their 14th win in a row. The 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 sweep improved the Mountaineers record to 25-1 and 15-1 in conference play. With only one loss, EOU is ranked first in the CCC above Corban University who gave EOU its solo loss earlier on in the season.

Hitting a .224 percentage overall, the Mountaineers smashed the stats hitting as high as a .333 in the first set. The Mountaineers also had a season-high of eight aces as a team. On offense, senior outside Megan Bunn amassed a team-high of 15 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Cambree Scott tallied nine kills while junior right side hitter Taylor Tibbetts recorded eight. Madison Pilon led the team in assists with 35. On the defensive side of the ball, junior libero Kiley McMurtrey accumulated 17 digs and junior defensive specialist Aspen Christiansen was close behind with 16.

The first set was quickly controlled by the Mountaineers, pulling ahead and reaching 10 points first at 10-6. The Mountaineers continued to put pressure on the Geoducks, increasing their lead to 16-11 after a service ace by Madison Pilon. After three EOU kills and an error by the Geoducks, the Mountaineers were up 20-15 and eventually closed it out at 25-16. The second set followed suit of the first with an early Mountaineer lead and EOU reaching 10 points first while the Geoducks trailed behind with only five points. Creating a seven point lead at 17-10, the Mountaineers knew they had the second set and continued to rack up points ending the set 25-19.

Having lost the first two sets, the Geoducks gave it all they had in the third and final set. Keeping the score within three points over the majority of the set, the Geoducks pushed and tied the score at 22-22.However, after a Geoduck error and kills by Kiley McMurtrey and Megan Bunn, the Mountaineers ended the set 25-22 and concluded the night with a sweep.

For the Geoducks, Sierra Wolff led the offense with eight kills and 15 assists. Zoe Shaw recorded eight and Chloee Hunt had six. Digs were led by Leiko Yamauchi with 23.

The Mountaineers are back home for a strong weekend of competition against Southern Oregon on Friday and Oregon Tech on Saturday for Senior Weekend.
