Mountaineers Stymied at Montana Tech 23-10

BUTTE, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon football team fell 23-10 on the road at No. 20 Montana Tech on a cold, snowy afternoon in Frontier Conference play.

The cold weather made for a defensive battle, where both teams struggled to move the ball effectively. The Orediggers managed 282 yards on offense while EOU (2-6, 2-5 Frontier) was held to 171.

Montana Tech had the first two scores of the games on one and two-yard rushing touchdowns by Blake Counts to make it 13-0 after the first quarter as the Mounties blocked the second point after attempt.

Both teams were held scoreless until 9:45 left in the third quarter when Tech's Cody Gagnon made a 37-yard field goal to make it 16-0.

The Mounties got on the board 10 seconds into the fourth when Jaiden Machuca made his seventh-straight field goal, a 32 yarder after an EOU 13-play, 59 yard drive.

The Blue and Gold cut the deficit to one score, 16-10, after a blocked punt by Derrick Fontenot was returned 30 yards by Josh Mendoza for a touchdown. It was the lone touchdown for EOU in the game, however.

On the next drive, the Orediggers essentially iced the game with a touchdown after a 75 yard drive on nine plays, eating away nearly four minutes of game clock.

Offensively, quarterback Kai Quinn was 12-for-35 passing for 128 yards. Running back Victor Dias carried the rock 21 times for 61 yards, adding three catches for a team-best 47 yards. Isaiah Thomas had four catches for 39 yards.

The defense had a strong effort overall, led by 13 tackles from Haziel Ledezma and 11 from Zackary Jacobs. Chase Van Wyck also had 10 tackels, while Solo Taylor posted nine with a sack. Sage DeLong also had a sack in the game.

The Mountaineers will next return home on Saturday, Nov. 2 to host rival College of Idaho at 1 p.m. at Community Stadium.
