Women’s Basketball Claims 2nd Win In Close Battle with Simpson

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In the Eastern Oregon women's basketball team's second game of the year, it was able to build on its winning form, defeating Simpson University 68-63 on Saturday night at Quinn Coliseum.

The last time these two teams faced off on November 3 of last year, Simpson defeated Eastern Oregon 51-46 in California. It was the first time ever that the Red Hawks were victorious over the Mountaineers. This time, EOU was determined not to be beaten again, getting revenge and sending the Redhawks home with a 68-63 defeat to give the Mounties six victories in seven contests.

It was not the best shooting performance from the Blue and Gold who shot 36.1 percent (26-for-72) in the contest, including a 18.5percent (5-for-27) from behind the arc. The Mountaineers shooting from the free throw line was also low (61.1%), but EOU still managed to find a way to come away with a victory.

Sophomore Beverly Slater led the Mountaineer scoring for the night, recording 19 points on 9-for-13 shooting, posting a double-double with 13 rebounds. Senior Jane Nelson also had a good night, tallying 17 points of her own as she was 6-for-11 from the floor and 4-of-6 from behind the arc. Senior Emma Logan added 10 points, while fellow senior Kylie Smith brought down 10 rebounds with seven points.

The Mounties used a big lead in rebounds to their advantage, pulling down 48 to the Redhawks 36. EOU was a lot more aggressive on the offensive glass, beating out Simpson 19-5 on offensive rebounds.

In the fourth quarter, Simpson tried to take the lead, putting up more shots than Eastern and shooting at 47 percent compared to the home side's 30.8 percent, but were unable to secure the road win.

The Mountaineers will be home again next weekend taking on the EOU Alumni team on October 26 at 4 p.m. and scrimmaging Umpqua Community College at 11 a.m. on October 27.
