Farrington’s Golden Goal Lifts No. 11 EOU to 2-1 Victory

BILLINGS, Mont. - After a long two days of traveling, the No. 11 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team arrived in Billings at Rocky Mountain College for a fierce conference game. The matchup did not disappoint, ending in a double-overtime golden goal victory for the Mountaineers, winning 2-1 on Friday afternoon.

Despite missing two key players in reigning CCC Defender of the Year Josee Bassett and leading goal scorer Nan Kiebert, the No. 11 Mounties came out victorious. Much of the win was due to great team play and the effort of junior Morgan Farrington, who scored both goals for EOU. Although the game was forced to double overtime, the game was full of chances for both sides.

The Mountaineers (9-1-2, 6-1-1 CCC) made no mistake capitalizing on their first opportunity just five minutes into the match. Morgan Farrington got her name on the score sheet when she tapped home a goal after following up from Erika Skindlov's saved shot.

Rocky Mountain (7-3-1, 4-2-1 CCC) answered back just before half time with a goal of their own. Lauryn Gamache found some space on the ball, beating her defender and shooting it from 30 yards out on a great shot that left no chance for keeper Cydni Cottrell.

RMC looked to be the side with more chances in the second half, outshooting the Mountaineers 9-5. The home side nearly grabbed the lead after earning a few consecutive corners that were troubling for the Mountie defense. The ball bounced around dangerously in the box but couldn't find the back of the net for the Bears.

With neither side unable to finish their chances in regulation, the game was forced to head to overtime. In the opening minutes, sophomore Mackinley Gregus found herself in a great position one on one with the RMC goalkeeper. However, her shot went just over the crossbar.

Golden goals are exciting in general, but Farrington took that to a whole new level when she scored a screamer to send the Mounties off with a victory. Farrington scored her second brace of the season, when she rocketed the ball into the back of the net on the 102nd minute. The ball hit the keeper's hands, deflecting off the cross bar and into the net. Gregus drew the assist on the Farrington's game winner.

Senior Cydni Cottrell had a big game for the Mountie defense, tallying six saves in net.

Despite losing, the Battlin' Bears out-shot the Mounties 17-11 and 7-3 on goal. Gamache led both sides with seven shots including four on goal.

The Mountaineers will return home to Community Stadium next week to play Northwest University and Evergreen University on Friday and Saturday.
