EOU Women’s Soccer Downed 2-1 by Northwest

LA GRANDE Ore.- In a battle for first place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Eagles and the Mountaineers faced off under the lights at Community Stadium. Despite a second half comeback, No. 11 Eastern Oregon was defeated 2-1 in the match up by first place Northwest on Friday.

The sides have a rivalry-like history, facing off five times in the past three seasons with two of those times in the CCC Championships final where each side has one title apiece. The Mountaineers are winless against the Eagles in their last three matchups (0-2-1).

Showing their dominance in the league, CCC leaders Northwest (13-2-0, 9-0-0 CCC) got on the scoreboard first. The Eagles took the ball down to the end line where Callie Wright was able to cut back across the face of the net and slot it past keeper Cydni Cottrell.

The Eagles increased their lead to 2-0 just 10 minutes into the second half from a long range shot by Olivia Morris that perfectly picked the top corner.

The game was far from over as EOU started creating chances of their own. Nan Kiebert whipped in a corner finding an unmarked Sarah Mitchell, who headed home the ball to bring the Mounties back into the game, only trailing by one goal with over 20 minutes to play.

The Mountaineers were relentless on the attack over the final 20 minutes, taking shot after shot. The Mounties outshot the Eagles 9-1, but the ball just wasn't finding the back of the net. Kat Sanchez was a brick wall in goal for NU, denying EOU on several occasions, some of which were point blank shots. She tallied six crucial saves to muffle Eastern's chances.

Despite the loss, the Mounties were the dominant side throughout the 90 minutes. The attack put up 14 shots, seven of which were on goal, earning five corners. Nan Kiebert and Kaitlyn McLeod led both sides in shots with three apiece. The defense was also strong, limiting NU to only three shots and two corners overall.

The team will look to bounce back Saturdayevening at Community Stadium against Evergreen Stateat 6:30 p.m.
