#5 EOU Volleyball Topples #7 Corban In 5-Set Redemption Win

LA GRANDE, Ore. - The No. 5 Eastern Oregon volleyball team got revenge on its only loss of the season, defeating No. 7 Corban University (13-4, 10-1 CCC) in a five-set thriller (16-25, 24-26, 25-11, 25-16, 15-6) on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum in a top-10 battle. Starting off the Homecoming weekend right, EOU advances to 20-1 and 10-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. EOU and Corban are now split in conference play, with each team winning on their home courts, and are tied atop the CCC with 10-1 records.

2018 All-American outside hitter Megan Bunn had a season high of 21 kills, adding two aces. The senior was the most dominant player on the floor all night, hitting .340 with a number of crucial kills late in the match. Sophomore middle blocker Jet Taylor had a historic night of her own, earning a career high of 17 kills as well as 10 blocks, giving her a double-double. Sophomore Breanna Shaffer tallied eight kills. Overall, the Mountaineer's hit a .214 compared to the Warriors .104. The Blue and Gold won in all phases of the game, posting 63 kills, 14 blocks and 102 digs.

Junior setter Madison Pilon amassed 44 assists on the night. Defensively, junior libero Kiley McMurtrey and junior defensive specialist Aspen Christiansen had 25 and 24 digs, respectively. 24 digs is Christiansen's career high, earning 23 against Oregon Tech back in 2018.

The first two sets were controlled by Corban. Getting ahead early at 6-4 in the first set, the Warriors made very few errors to push the EOU defense to their limits. The first set ended with the Warriors winning by almost 10 points at 25-16 as they looked strong out of the gates.

The second set was much more back and forth than the first, with the Mountaineers pushing the pace more than the Warriors. EOU started their lead at 11-10, extending it all the way to 11-15. The Mountaineers later had set point at 24-22, forcing a Warrior timeout. Out of the break, Corban came back using two EOU errors and a service ace to win 26-24.

Then, EOU hit a new stride. Kicking into gear, the last three sets were completely dominated by the Mountaineers. After hitting under .150 in each of the first two sets, the Mounties responded with hitting percentages of .325, .293 and .368 in the final three sets.

Starting the third, EOU took the lead early with two kills from sophomore middle Cambree Scott, three kills by Bunn, and a kill by Taylor all within the first seven EOU points. The Mountaineers kept this going, keeping the Warriors at just four points to their 13. The Mountaineers ran away with the set, leaving the Warriors in the dust and winning by 14 points at 25-11.

EOU continued its momentum as the fourth set built off the 14-point win. The only time EOU was behind in this set was the very first point when Corban was up 1-0. After this initial point the Mountaineer's never trailed, increasing their lead by more points each play. First it was four points at 12-8, then five points at 16-11, then six points at 21-15. The Mountaineers closed out the set winning 25-16 in another dominant effort.

The fifth and final set showed just how deadly this No. 5 Eastern Oregon team can be when firing on all cylinders. The team came out hot again, getting ahead early at 4-1 giving the Warriors only one more point before the teams switched sides at 8-2. After four consecutive errors by the Warriors, Taylor finished off the match with her 17th kill, making it 15-6 final.

For the Warriors, Lanae Wohlmacher led the team in kills with 12 while Cassie Cunningham tallied 10. Cierra Leopoldino accumulated 24 assists and 14 digs.  On defense, Kealani Ontai earned a game-high of 27 digs.

The Mountaineer's are back to close out Homecoming weekend Saturday against Northwest Christian at 1 p.m.
