Men's Soccer Settles for Scoreless Draw with C of I

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Mountaineers hosted the College of Idaho Thursday night at Community Stadium, ending in a 2OT scoreless draw in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers (5-2-2, 3-1-1 CCC) looked to build off of a 2-1 win over Oregon Tech last Sunday, but they couldn't find the back of the net in 110 minutes of play. Goalkeeper Aidan Wright saved all seven shots on goal by the Coyotes, providing a bright spot for the Mountaineers.

College of Idaho (1-3-2, 0-3-1) was shut out for their fourth consecutive game Thursday night. The Mountaineer defense held their line all night long, and made nothing easy for the Yotes.

The big highlight for the Mountaineers was an incredible save from point blank range in the first half by Wright, who made three saves in the first 45 minutes.

Neither team could get consistent offense going. That being said, both defenses stood their ground and forced shots to come in from long distance, and allowed next to nothing in the middle during regulation.

The game remained scoreless through the first 90 minutes. Very little separated the two clubs, and the College of Idaho barely out shot the Mounties by a 17-16 margin.

Tensions remained high throughout the two ten minute overtime periods, but neither squad could find the elusive game-winner. At the end of the match, College of Idaho had 21 shots, compared to the Mounties 20. The game got very physical late, and the two teams combined for 43 fouls and 7 cards.

Senior Abraham Garcia led the Mounties with five shots and two on goal while five other players had at least two shots. The Yotes' Ben Bechor and Cole Fuller each tallied four shots.

EOU had their chances in the box late, but just couldn't find the tie-breaking goal. The Mountaineers will return to Community Stadium on Sunday against Rocky Mountain at 1:30 p.m.
