EOU Women’s Soccer Ties 3-3 in OT at Carroll

HELENA, Mont. - The No. 19 Eastern Oregon women's soccer team tied 3-3 in double overtime at Carroll College late Sunday afternoon in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The first half featured a flurry of goals between both teams. The Saints ( 1-5-1, 0-0-1 CCC) struck first just two minutes into the game after junior Kristen Girolami intercepted a ball from the defense and put it beyond junior goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell

EOU (4-1-1, 0-1-1 CCC) answered back seven minutes later after some nice combination plays between senior Taylor Boyer and junior Abri Cardenas before Cardenas buried the ball in the back of the net. At the 17-minute mark, Boyer put the Mountaineers in the lead after capitalizing on a loose ball from a throw in making it  a 2-1 EOU advantage. Sophomore Morgan Farrington extended the lead to 3-1, when Mackinley Gregus beat her defenders and unselfishly played a square ball across the face of the goal for Farrington to place into the open net.

The opening 40 minutes of the second half were played tightly in the midfield as both teams had equal opportunities, with neither able to add to the score sheet.

With 5 minutes left to play, Carroll made a late comeback with two goals in two minutes, tying the game 3-3 and forcing it into overtime. The Saints second goal of the match came when they were awarded a penalty kick followed by senior Tayla Vaira equalizer from 30-yards out just minutes later. .

Each team had chances in the two overtime periods and, despite the Mounties leading the shot count 5-3 in OT, the score remained unchanged and the match ended in a 3-3 tie.

The Mounties finished with a 23-13 advantage in shots for the match, including a 16-5 lead in the first half. Boyer and sophomore Cailin Koupal each had four shots.

EOU returns home next weekend to face Southern Oregon on Friday and Oregon Tech on Sunday at Community Stadium.
