EOU Starts Season 2-0 with Wins over Carroll & No. 12 Montana Tech

SPOKANE, Wash. – It was a great start to the season for the Eastern Oregon volleyball team, opening the year with wins over Carroll College and No. 12 Montana Tech on the first day of the Spokane Falls Tournament on Friday.
 
GAME 1: #15 EOU 3, Carroll 0
 
The Mountaineers (2-0) showed their early season cohesion in the first match of the season, easily disposing of Carroll in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-21.
 
EOU used an efficient .236 hitting percentage to cruise to the victory while holding the Fighting Saints to just .085 for the match. The Mountaineers finished with 43 kills to the Carroll's 28.
 
Junior Megan Bunn led the attack with 11 kills while adding 12 digs for a double-double. In her first collegiate match, freshman Breanna Shaffer added eight kills, followed by junior Hailee Ackerman with seven kills. Also in her first match, freshman Cambree Scott had six kills on an efficient .455 hitting percentage.
 
On the defensive end, senior Holli Mullins led EOU with 18 digs. Senior Sarah Carpenter finished with 18 assists, while sophomore Madison Pilon added 10.
 
GAME 2: #15 EOU 3, #12 Montana Tech 2
 
In their first ranked match of the season, the Mounties were forced to come from behind after dropping the first two sets. Both first sets were close, however, as Montana Tech narrowly squeaked out victories by scores of 25-23.
 
The Blue and Gold responded in set three with a 25-19 win after hitting an incredible .636 for the set. After taking care of a quick 25-16 set four, the Mountaineers completed the comeback, taking down the Orediggers 15-12.
 
Ackerman had a career-high 19 kills in the match on 36 attacks, recording a strong .389 hitting percentage to lead the Mounties offense. Freshman Kaci Cox added 12 kills and six block assists while Bunn had her second-straight double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs. Scott finished with seven kills and seven block assists.
 
Carpenter posted a 41 assists, a career-high as a Mountaineer, along with 17 digs. Mullins once again paced the team with 23 digs.
 
The Mountaineers will wrap up the tournament on Saturday with a match against Lewis-Clark State at 1 p.m.
