Mounties Split Opening Doubleheader at Northwest

REDMOND, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon softball team began its Cascade Collegiate Conference series at Northwest with a split of the first two games on Friday. The Mountaineers won Game 1 by a 3-2 score, but fell on a walk-off hit 6-5 in the eighth inning of Game 2.

GAME 1 – Eastern Oregon 3, Northwest 2

The Mountaineers (17-11, 12-4 CCC) began the series at Northwest with a close 3-2 victory to win their fifth-straight series opener. The Blue and Gold got another strong start from senior pitcher Hailey Kline, who earned her 11th victory of the season with a complete game effort.

Kline outdueled Eagles' starter Hannah Yelas, allowing two runs over seven frames. Kline gave up four hits, but struck out 11 batters and shutout the Eagles over the final five innings. Yelas also had a good start, allowing three runs in her own complete game.

The Mounties opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, as senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier knocked a base hit to right field to score senior shortstop Lena Richards.

After Northwest took the lead on a two-run home run in the second, Spanier tied htings up with an RBI double, scoring senior outfielder/second baseman Maryssa Santi. Junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas followed up with an RBI groundout, scoring junior outfielder Rayne Spencer from third to give EOU a 3-2 lead. It would be all the Mounties and Kline needed, as neither team scored over the final four innings.

GAME 2 – Northwest 6, Eastern Oregon 5 (8 innings)

The Blue and Gold looked on their way to taking the first two games of the series and clinching their fifth-straight CCC series win, as they got off to a 5-1 lead through five innings. In the sixth inning, however, the Eagles scored four runs to tied the game 5-5 and, in extra innings, won the game on walk-off single to earn the day one split.

After Northwest opened the game with a run in the first inning, EOU answered with five unanswered runs. Defreitas kicked things off with a solo home run in the second inning. In the third, junior catch Brandi Bowling and Richards scored on a Northwest error to make it 3-1.

In the fifth, Spanier brought home Santi on a single, followed by an RBI single by Defreitas to score Spencer, extending EOU's lead to 5-1.

In the sixth inning, a leadoff error came back to hurt the Mountaineers as four runs came home. With two outs and two runners on, the Eagles put together three hits and a walk to tie the game up 5-5.

In the eighth inning, the Mounties could not scratch across a run while Northwest finished the game with a two-out, walk-off infield single.

Sophomore pitcher Ashton Kazmierski pitched a strong game, throwing 5.2 innings. She allowed five runs, with just one of them earned due to the error. Sophomore pitcher Hannah Rothwell came in relief, allowing one run in two innings.

The Blue and Gold finish the series at Northwest on Saturday, with game times at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. The games will be played in Bothell, Washington at Cedar Park Christian High School.
