EOU Sweeps Northwest on Saturday to Win 5th-Straight Series

BOTHELL, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon softball team battled out its 5th-straight Cascade Collegiate Conference series victory, sweeping Northwest in Saturday's doubleheader with a 2-1 victory in 10 innings followed by a 7-2 win.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 2, Northwest 1 (Final 10)
It took a grueling 10 innings, but the Mountaineers (19-11, 13-4 CCC) earned the win in Saturday's opener, thus taking two of three games that counted in the CCC standings. EOU needed another standout performance by senior pitcher Hailey Kline, who pitched all 10 innings to give the offense a chance to win the game late.

Kline won her 12th game of the season, pitching her 14th complete game in as many starts. After allowing a run in the first inning, she settled in to shutout the Eagles over the final nine innings, striking nine batters.

Northwest took the early lead with a run in the first, but the Mounties tied it up in the third. With runners on the corners, junior catcher Brandi Bowling broke for second base and, on the throw, junior second baseman Madi Barr scored from third on a double steal. The run was crucial as EOU would not score for the next six innings.

In the 10th inning, senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier tripled to lead off the inning. The next batter, junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas, brought her home with an RBI single. In the bottom of the 10th, Kline set down the side in order to secure the victory.

The Mounties finished the game with nine hits with three by Spanier and two by Defreitas and Barr.

GAME 2 | Eastern Oregon 7, Northwest 2
With the CCC series clinched, the Mounties aimed to take three of four games in the finale. Northwest had different plans early, beginning the game with runs in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead.

After a slow start, the Blue and Gold offense broke out with seven runs in the fourth through sixth innings. Defreitas started things off with her team-leading seventh home run of the season to tie the score 2-2.

In the fifth inning, junior outfielder Rayne Spencer matched Defreitas with a two-run homer of her own. The Mounties solidified the game in the sixth as senior shortstop Lena Richards had an RBI groundout, followed by a two-run double by Spencer.

The Mountaineers totaled 13 hits in the game, led by a 3-for-4 day by senior outfielder/second baseman Maryssa Santi. Spencer, Richards, Defreitas and Bowling each added two hits apiece.

In the circle, sophomore Ashton Kazmierski made the start, allowing two runs in three innings. Fellow sophomore pitcher Lauren Spencer had a great performance out of the bullpen, not allowing a hit over four innings with three strikeouts as she won her third game.

With the wins, the Blue and Gold have won five-straight CCC series, recording a 12-2 conference record in that span.

The Mountaineers return home on April 13 and 14, hosting British Columbia for a four-game series. Friday's games will begin at 2 p.m., followed by an 11 a.m. start for Saturday's doubleheader.
