Santi Hits Walk-off Homer in Final Home At-Bat on Senior Day

LA GRANDE, Ore. – In her final collegiate at-bat at Peggy Anderson Field, EOU's lone four-year senior Maryssa Santi stepped up to the plate with two runners on, two outs and the Mountaineers trailing 2-0. With a full count, Santi found her pitch and roped it over the left field wall for a three-run walk-off home run on Senior Day as EOU defeated No. 8 Southern Oregon on Senior Day.

"That was a picture perfect ending to senior weekend," said head coach Erin Dickhausen. "We battled hard all weekend and it paid off. I'm so proud of our team, and especially the seniors."

GAME 1 – #8 Southern Oregon 5, Eastern Oregon 1

With the tiebreaker over Corban, Southern Oregon needed to win the final CCC contest of the series to earn home field advantage for the postseason tournament on May 4-6. With a loss by Corban and an SOU win, however, the Raiders clinched the CCC regular season title outright with a 22-5 conference record.

Southern got on the board first on a squeeze bunt play as Hannah Wessel laid down a perfect bunt to score Tayler Walker from third with the only available for EOU at first base.

The Mountaineers (23-20, 15-12 CCC) answered in the third inning as junior outfielder Rayne Spencer singled to left field to score fellow junior outfielder Bobbie Bertsch from third base and knot the score at 1-1.

Senior pitcher Hailey Kline and SOU's Gabby Sandoval battled back and forth until the Raiders broke the tie with a run in the fifth inning. SOU tacked on a run in the sixth on a solo home run by Walker before scoring two more runs in the seventh led by a triple by Kelsey Randall.

Kline allowed five runs in another complete game with five strikeouts, while Sandoval earned her 20th win of the season by allowing just one run over seven innings.

The Mountaineer offense tallied six hits in the game, all coming from three players including Spencer, Bertsch and junior second baseman Madison Barr. Spencer went 3-for-3 with an RBI, Barr was 2-for-2 with a walk while Bertsch was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

GAME 2 – Eastern Oregon 3, #8 Southern Oregon 2

With two runners on, two outs and EOU trailing 2-0 in their final home game of the season, Santi left her mark at Peggy Anderson Field with a walk-off home run on Senior Day.

"We know what we can do against the top team in the conference and hopefully can ride this energy and excitement all the way through the tournament," said Dickhausen.

The Mountaineers had struggled to bring runners in scoring position home throughout the day, but finally got the big hit they were looking for. Barr started the rally with a one-out single to right-center field and advanced to second on a ground out by Bertsch. With two outs, senior shortstop Lena Richards walked to bring the tying run to the plate. SOU countered by bringing in Sandoval to pitch, but Santi won the seven-pitch battle with her fourth home run of the season.

EOU got a strong pitching performance by sophomore Ashton Kazmierski to keep the game close. Kazmierski pitched five shutout innings before two runs came home in the sixth. Junior pitcher Lauren Spencer entered the game in the sixth inning in a big moment with the bases loaded and two outs, but struck out the batter to end the inning. Spencer earned her sixth win of the season with a shutout inning in the top of the seventh.

The Blue and Gold recorded nine hits in the game led by Santi's home run and two-hit games by Richards, senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier and Barr. Junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas and junior catcher Brandi Bowling also tallied hits for EOU.

Before Saturday's game, the team honored the collegiate careers of Santi, Richards, Spanier and Kline and the quartet played their final home regular season games.

The season continues, however, for the Mountaineers into the postseason as they head into the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships as the No. 4 seed. The Mounties will face No. 5-seed British Columbia in the opening game of the tournament on May 4 at 9 a.m. The tournament will be hosted by Southern Oregon in Ashland, Oregon from May 4-6.
