EOU Drops Tight 3-2 Contest vs. UBC in CCC Opener

ASHLAND, Ore. – British Columbia scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Eastern Oregon softball team fell 3-2 in the opening game of the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships on Friday.

The Mountaineers (23-21) will await their next opponent in an elimination game on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. EOU will either take on No. 2-seed Corban, No. 3-seed Oregon Tech or No. 6-seed Carroll.

The Blue and Gold offense got off to a great start in the first inning thanks to a two-run home run by senior third baseman and Second Team All-CCC selection Chelsea Spanier. With senior shortstop Lena Richards on second base, Spanier homered over the left field fence to put the Mounties up 2-0.

EOU nearly added more runs in the inning as junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas and junior catch Brandi Bowling followed up with two-out hits, but were stranded on base.

The Thunderbirds quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer of their own by Claire Eccles.

From there on out, it was a pitcher's duel between senior Hailey Kline and UBC's Emma Tuson. After allowing four hits in the first inning, Tuson settled down to hold EOU to just one hit over the final six frames.

Kline also shutdown UBC's offense to just three more hits and one run over her final five innings. The senior also struck out 10 batters.

In the sixth inning, the Thunderbirds broke the 2-2 tie as Eccles once again came through with an RBI double. Eccles was a thorn for the Mountaineers, recording three of the team's five hits with all three RBI.
