Mountaineers Fall in Close Games vs. No. 8 SOU

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team battled No. 8-ranked Southern Oregon is two closely played contests, but fell 1-0 and 6-1 in a Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon.

GAME 1 – Southern Oregon 1, Eastern Oregon 0

A pitching duel between EOU's Hailey Kline and Southern's Gabby Sandoval was settled by an unearned run scored by the Raiders. In the second inning with two outs and runners on first and second, SOU scored the lone run of the game on a fly ball to left field. Junior Rayne Spencer made the catch, but on the transition to her hand the ball came out of the glove and landed on the ground, and the umpires deemed it a no catch.

The Mountaineers (20-19, 14-11 CCC) were stymied by Sandoval as they were limited to just two hits despite hard contact throughout the game. Line drives that looked destined to hit grass were instead snagged by Raider defenders. Junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas had both of the team's hits.

Kline threw a complete game, striking out three while walking none as she allowed just the one unearned run. Her counterpart, Sandoval, struck out two and walked none in a complete game shutout.

GAME 2 – Southern Oregon 6, Eastern Oregon 1

The Mounties played closely with SOU through four innings, but things began to unravel in the fifth and sixth and the Raiders scored five unanswered runs to sweep the doubleheader with a 6-1 win.

SOU scored another unearned run to open the scoring in the third inning as Olivia Mackey came home to score. EOU answered in the bottom half of the inning as senior outfielder Maryssa Santi singled up the middle to score junior second baseman Madison Barr from second with two outs and tie the score at 1-1.

In the fifth inning, however, SOU opened the inning with two hits to put runners on second and third. Harlee Donovan then came through with a two-RBI single to give the Raiders a 3-1 lead.

In the sixth, Southern added three insurance runs, capped off by a two-RBI double by Kelsey Randall.

Sophomore Ashton Kazmierski made the start, allowing three runs, with two earned, in five innings pitched with two strikeouts. Sophomore Jessica Lambert pitched the final 1.2 innings without allowing a run.

Offensively, EOU had three multi-hit performances as Santi, Defreitas and Barr each tallied two hits. Rayne Spencer walked in all three of her plate appearances.

The Mountaineers complete the regular season on Saturday against SOU with games scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday will include EOU's Senior Day celebration, honoring the careers of seniors Lena Richards, Chelsea Spanier, Santi and Kline as they play their final regular season games at Peggy Anderson Field.
