Mountaineers Sweep Providence Behind 23-4 Scoring Differential

RICHLAND, Wash. – The Eastern Oregon softball team had everything working on Sunday, sweeping Providence in a Cascade Collegiate Conference doubleheader. The Mounties won Game 1 by a 5-1 score and followed up with an impressive 18-3 win in five innings to complete the series. The doubleheader was a makeup from March 18, which was cancelled due to snow in Montana.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 5, Providence 1
After a tough offensive series at Corban, the Mountaineers (22-17, 15-9 CCC) bounced back with a 5-1 victory over Providence in the final CCC counting game of the series.

With the bases loaded in the second inning, junior second baseman Madison Barr put EOU ahead 1-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier. In the third inning, junior outfielder Rayne Spencer drove home the second run with a double to score junior outfielder Bobbi Bertsch.

The Argos got one run back in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Kylie Gonzales. With the Mounties leading by just one in the seventh inning, Spencer came through with another big hit, a three-run home run that gave EOU the insurance it needed.

Senior pitcher Hailey Kline needed little run support as she made easy work of the Argo lineup. The senior earned her 13th win of the season, allowing just one run with six strikeouts in the complete game victory. Kristina George pitched a complete game for the Argos allowing four earned runs in seven innings.

Spencer led the offensive attack with a 2-for-3 game and 4 runs batted in. Spanier, Barr, Bertsch and junior catcher Brandi Bowling also tallied hits for EOU.

GAME 2 | Eastern Oregon 18, Providence 3 (5 Innings)
EOU burst out with its highest offensive output of the season, run ruling the Argos 18-3 in five innings. The Mountaineers had everything going in the game with 10 hits, nine walks while forcing six Providence errors by putting the ball in play with just three strikeouts.

After a first inning run in which senior shortstop Lena Richards scored from third on an error, the Mountaineers exploded for eight runs in the third inning. Bowling opened the big frame with an RBI single to score Spencer. Then with two outs, EOU strung together four-straight hits and a walk to come away with seven more runs in the frame. Bertsch, Richards, Spencer and senior outfielder Maryssa Santi each had RBIs in the inning.

Already up 9-0, the Mounties did not take the foot of the gas in the fourth inning, scoring five more runs to go up 14-0. Bowling scored on an error to start the inning followed by a two-run single by Richards to score sophomore Payton Pocklington and junior Tayler Finch.

Santi then hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman outfielder Madison Parker from third. Fellow freshman outfielder Julie Hernandez followed up with her first collegiate hit and RBI, scoring Richards on a single.

The Mounties closed out their scoring in the fifth inning with another four runs. Sophomore Katie Silvestri scored from third on a wild pitch to begin the scoring. Junior outfielder/pitcher Hannah Rothwell drove in a run with a bases loaded hit by pitch to score freshman Samantha Bergeron. Hernandez had her second-straight hit and RBI to score Parker and sophomore third baseman Jordan Shaw drove in freshman Sydney Peal on a ground out.

Junior Lauren Spencer earned the victory for EOU, allowing three runs in four innings pitched. Sophomore Jessica Lambert threw a scoreless fifth inning to close out the victory.

The Mountaineers will wrap up the regular season at home on Friday and Saturday against top-ranked rival Southern Oregon. Friday will be National Babe Ruth Day where fans can earn Baby Ruth candy bars and Domino's Pizza coupons for wearing baseball and softball apparel. Saturday will be Senior Day, where the Mountaineers will honor their four seniors Richards, Santi, Spanier and Kline.
