EOU Clinches CCC Tournament Berth Despite Losses at Corban

SALEM, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team fell in the final two games of the series at No. 13 Corban by scores of 4-0 and 4-3 on Saturday, but still clinched a berth into the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships in May.

With losses by seventh place College of Idaho on Friday and Saturday, the Mountaineers cannot fall below sixth place in the CCC standings. The top-six teams in the conference make the postseason tournament.

GAME 1 – Corban 4, Eastern Oregon 0

The Mountaineer bats continued to be stifled by Corban pitchers in the CCC counting finale of the series. The Warriors' Sabrina Boyd threw a one-hitter against the Mountaineers who were limited to just two base runners against one of the top pitchers in the NAIA.

Senior shortstop Lena Richards broke up the no-hitter in the third inning that advanced junior Hannah Rothwell to third after she was hit by a pitch, but EOU was unable to score.

Corban opened the scoring in the first inning with a two run home run by Mahina Chong. They added a run in the third on a solo home run by Maddy Melton, before Alyssa Doty scored on an EOU error in the fourth.

Senior pitcher Hailey Kline struck out six batters in a six-inning complete game, allowing three earned runs.

GAME 2 – Corban 4, Eastern Oregon 3

The Mountaineers suffered another frustrating one-run loss in the final game of the series, a non-conference counter, falling 4-3. For the third time in the series, Corban finished the game with a walk-off hit, this time an RBI single to left field by Megan Rybar.

EOU entered the seventh inning down 3-2, but took its first lead of the game 4-3 as Richards and senior outfielder Maryssa Santi scored on a Warrior error on a hit ball by junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas with two outs.

In the bottom the inning, however, Corban strung together a walk and three hits to score the go-ahead runs, earning the sweep.

The Warriors opened the scoring in the second inning on a two-run double by Chaleigh Kirkwood. EOU ended its scoreless streak that went back to game one of the series on an RBI single by Richards to score designated player Tayler Finch in the fourth inning.

Despite the losses, EOU will continue their season in the postseason and have proved they can stick with the top-ranked Warriors with three games decided by a run. The two teams will potentially meet up once again in the CCC Tournament May 4-6.

The Mountaineers will next complete a series with Providence on Sunday, with games being played in Richland, Washington at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The games are being made up from a March 18 doubleheader that was cancelled due to snow.
