Mountaineers Battle #13 Corban in Extra Inning Pitching Duels

SALEM, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon softball team stuck with No. 13-ranked Corban every step of the way in two pitching dominated extra inning games, but ultimately fell 2-1 in nine innings in Game 1, before dropping a heartbreaking 1-0 Game 2 in 12 innings on Friday.

GAME 1 – Corban 2, Eastern Oregon 1 (9 Innings)

Game 1 of the series featured a pitchers' duel between two of the conference's best in EOU senior Hailey Kline and Corban's Sabrina Boyd. Both pitchers were dealing, each getting through five scoreless innings with few offensive threats.

In the top of the sixth inning, junior outfielder Rayne Spencer put the Mountaineers ahead with one swing of her bat, connecting for a two-out solo home run, her sixth of the season, to put EOU ahead 1-0.

The Blue and Gold came to within two outs of taking the victory over the top-ranked Warriors, but Corban's Jessie Isham answered with a one-out solo home run of her own to knot the score at 1-1.

Both Kline and Boyd continued to pitch into extra innings, but in the bottom of the ninth, Corban strung together three-straight singles, capped by Isham's walk-off single, to take the game 2-1.

Kline pitched a complete game of eight plus innings, tallying eight strikeouts. Boyd earned her 16th win of the year for Corban, allowing one run over nine innings.

The Warriors finished with eight hits to EOU's seven. Spencer and junior catcher Brandi Bowling each recorded two hits to lead the Mountie offense.

GAME 2 – Corban 1, Eastern Oregon 0 (12 Innings)

Game 2 of the series was a true test of pitching as it took until the 12th innings to break up a 0-0 tie. EOU pitchers Ashton Kazmierski and Lauren Spencer combined to limit the Warriors to just five hits and one run over 11.1 innings before Corban won on another walk-off single.

In a thrilling 12th inning, junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas started a two-out rally with a double to left-center field. Freshman Madison Parker pinch ran for Defreitas, but was thrown out at the plate on a great throw by Corban's Megan Rybar after a single by Bowling.

In the bottom half of the inning, the Warriors got a lead off single by Alyssa Doty who was then pinch ran for by Tabby Humphrey, who then stole second base. Humphrey was moved over to third on a groundout before Tatum Prechtel brought her home with a single to right field to give Corban its second-straight walk-off hit.

Lauren Spencer received the tough-luck loss after coming into the game in relief in the fifth inning. She allowed just the one run over a dominant 6.2 innings. Kazmierski made the start and was effective over 4.2 innings, not allowing a run.

For the Warriors, Ally Crakes pitched the first nine innings before Alyssa Vidal closed out the final three to earn her first win of the season.

Between the two games, the teams combined for four runs in over 20 full innings played.

The teams complete the series on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m., with game three counting in the conference standings. The Mountaineers will also complete a series with Providence on Sunday, with games being played in Pasco, Washington at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The games are being made up from a March 18 doubleheader that was cancelled due to snow.
