Softball Wins 5th & 6th Straight with Doubleheader Sweep of Argos

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Eastern Oregon softball team continued its offensive surge, run-ruling Northwest Christian in both games of a doubleheader, 12-0 and 16-7, in Cascade Collegiate Conference play to complete a four-game sweep on Sunday afternoon.

GAME 1 | Eastern Oregon 10, Providence 1
The Blue and Gold (10-8, 6-2 CCC) won its fifth-straight game and the fourth in the last five contests by run-rule, defeating Providence 10-1 in a shortened six innings.

The Mounties got off to a quick start with four runs in the top of the first inning, beginning where they left off from the previous weekend against Northwest Christian. With the bases loaded, junior first baseman Shevan DeFreitas walked to drive in a run. Two errors by the Argos brought home the next three runs for the Mounties who broke through without a hit.

Junior outfielder Rayne Spencer drove in a run on an RBI single in the second inning, while Lena Richards did the same in the third. Senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier scored on a wild pitch in the fourth before the Mounties added three runs in the sixth thanks to an RBI single by junior second baseman Madison Barr and an Argo passed ball and error.

EOU needed just eight hits to score 10 runs, helped out by their patience at the plate with eight walks, along with five Providence errors.

Senior pitcher Hailey Kline threw another complete game, allowing just one run on four hits with three strikeouts. She earned her sixth victory of the season. Richards, Barr and junior catcher Brandi Bowling led the Mounties with two hits apiece.

GAME 2 | Eastern Oregon 4, Providence 2
Providence (2-9, 0-5 CCC) got off to a better start in game two, scoring runs in the second and third inning to grab a 2-0 lead.

The Mounties answered back to tie the game in the fourth inning as Spencer crushed a two run home run over the center field wall, driving in senior second baseman/outfielder Maryssa Santi. In the fifth inning, Santi doubled home Richards to give EOU the lead and later scored on a throwing error by the Argos to go up 4-2.

Entering out of the bullpen, sophomore pitcher Ashton Kazmierski won her fourth game as she recorded four shutout innings for the Blue and Gold. She entered in relief of junior pitcher Lauren Spencer, who pitched an effective three innings with two runs allowed.

The Mountaineers had just four hits in the game, but made them count. Santi went 3-for-3 with two runs scored an RBI to lead the offense while Spencer had the fourth hit, the big two-run homer.

With the CCC counting portion of the series already in hand, the Mountaineers will go for the sweep of the Argos on Sunday. Game times are scheduled for 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Mountain time from Missoula, Montana on the campus of the University of Montana.
