McCullough’s 28 Points Not Enough as EOU Falls to SOU in CCC Quarterfinals

ASHLAND, Ore. - In the Cascade Collegiate Conference Quarterfinals, the No. 5-seed Eastern Oregon men's basketball team was unable to stymie a balanced Southern Oregon offense, falling to the No. 4-seed Raiders 97-73 on Wednesday night.

Sophomore guard Max McCullough finished with his 18th game of at least 20 points in 29 games, recording 28 points to lead all scorers, but it was not enough. The Raiders used a balanced scoring attack that saw five players finish in double figures offensively. Tristen Holmes had a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Southern while Ben DeSaulnier recorded 15 points.

The loss sends the Mountaineers to 21-8 overall, their first loss out of a conference counting game.

Southern Oregon (20-11) came out scorching hot to start the second half, using separate runs of 10 and 11 points to go-ahead 58-35 through just five minutes. The Raiders hit their first four three-pointers of the half to put EOU in a deep hole that they were unable to climb out of.

The Raiders went ahead early in the first half 9-4 thanks to a 7-0 run. The Mounties responded with a run of eight points of their own to go on top 12-9 through 6:35 of play. The first half featured five lead changes as the teams battled back-and-forth, but SOU used a 10-6 advantage to end the half to take a 39-32 lead into the locker room.

McCullough had 13 of his 28 points in the opening 20 on 6-for-8 shooting, but EOU was held to 2-for-12 shooting from behind the arc. The Raiders dominated inside with a 28-16 advantage in the paint, a 21-15 lead in rebounding while shooting 53 percent from field.

Freshman guard Jordan May finished with 15 points while senior guard Matt Wong had 10 as the only other players in double-digit scoring. Senior guard/forward Brennan Pope recorded nine points with six boards.

EOU finished the evening shooting 41 percent from the field, but were outmatched by the hot shooting Raiders at just under 58 percent. SOU finished with a 58-28 lead in points in the paint.

The Raiders move onto the semifinals of the CCC Tournament, visiting No. 1-seed College of Idaho on Saturday.
