Mountaineers Finish Season-Opening Series with Even Split

NAMPA, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon softball team once again split a doubleheader with Northwest Nazarene on Saturday afternoon, falling in game one 11-5 before responding with a 6-3 victory in the series finale.

GAME 1

The Mountaineers (2-2) got off to a strong start in game one as junior designated player Shevan DeFreitas opened the scoring the first inning with a sacrifice fly to score catcher Brandi Bowling from third. In the second inning, senior second baseman Maryssa Santi crushed the team's first home run of the season, a solo shot to give EOU a 2-0 lead.

Northwest Nazarne (7-10) controlled the next three innings, taking a 11-3 lead after four innings. The Mountaineers cored two runs in the fifth thanks to a two-run home run by junior outfielder Rayne Spencer, but it was not enough as the Blue and Gold fell 11-5.

GAME 2

Senior pitcher Hailey Kline, making her first start of the season, went start to finish as she threw a complete game to earn her first victory of the year. Kline struck out nine batters allowing three runs on seven hits.

Kline earned the victory thanks to a three-run seventh inning by the Mountie offense. Santi drove in the go-ahead run on an RBI single to right field, followed by a two-RBI double by junior second baseman Madison Barr to extend the lead to 6-3.

EOU got the scoring started once again in the first inning as senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier had an RBI single to score Bowling. The Mounties added two runs in the fifth inning as junior outfielder Hannah Rothwell homered to right field.

The Mountaineers will be back in action at the Cavalier Classic in Portland, Oregon on Feb. 24 and 25. They will face Western Oregon twice, Saint Martin's and host Concordia.
