Mountaineers Split Doubleheader on Opening Day at NNU

NAMPA, Idaho – The Eastern Oregon softball team split a pair of games on opening day against NCAA Division II Northwest Nazarene, falling 13-8 in game one before winning game two 4-3 on Friday afternoon.

GAME 1

The Crusaders (6-9), already in the thick of their season, jumped on the Mountaineers (1-1) in the first three innings for 10 of their 13 runs.

Junior designated player Shevan DeFreitas put the Blue and Gold on the board for the first time with a solo home run to left field in the second inning. Defreitas added an RBI single in the third inning to score senior second baseman Maryssa Santi. Junior outfielder Rayne Spencer added an RBI single to score senior third baseman Chelsea Spanier and cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Mounties began another rally in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs as Spencer opened the scoring with a bases-loaded walk. Junior outfielder Hannah Rothwell was then hit by a pitch to score another run, followed by an NNU error and fielder's choice to bring home two more runs.

Spencer drove in her third run of the game in the sixth inning on a double, scoring Spanier. Spencer went 2-for-3 at the dish with a run scored and three RBI. Defreitas was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Junior pitcher Lauren Spencer was saddled with the loss in 2.1 innings pitched, striking out four batters.

GAME 2

In a 2-2 game in the top of the seventh, Spanier had the big hit, a two-RBI double that gave the Mounties a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh as they would hold onto their first win of the season by a 4-3 score.

The Mountaineers got a strong pitching performance from sophomore pitcher Ashton Kazmierski in game two. The transfer out of Iowa Lakes Community College threw six innings, allowing just two runs on five hits to earn her first career win as a Mountaineer. Sophomore pitcher Jessica Lambert allowed one unearned run in the seventh inning, picking up the save.

EOU got ahead in the game, scoring the first run as Defreitas singled to right field with Spanier scoring on an error by the right fielder. The Mounties later extended their lead to two as Rayne Spencer stayed hot at the plate with an RBI single. After two runs by the Crusaders in the sixth inning, Spanier played hero in the top of the seventh.

Rae Young threw a complete game for the Crusaders in the loss.

The Mountaineers finish up the four-game series with NNU on Saturday. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 12 p.m. Mountain time.
