No. 17 EOU Completes Wire-to-Wire 71-61 Victory Over OIT

LA GRANDE, Ore. - The No. 17 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team made it a perfect weekend at Quinn Coliseum defeating Oregon Tech in a wire-to-wire victory 71-61 on Saturday night in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The Mountaineers (6-2, 2-0 CCC) took down the Owls (6-5, 1-1 CCC) with an all-round team effort, as they never trailed in the game after taking the lead 4-2 in the opening minutes. On the attack, nine players scored at least five points, and four players recorded at least five rebounds. EOU showed its depth with 31 points coming off the bench.

The Blue and Gold maintained the lead the entire contest, with their largest lead of 18 points coming in the second quarter.

The Mountaineers had two players in double figure scoring. Senior Maren Herrud led the team in points with 11, adding three rebounds, one assist and one block. She was followed closely by junior Jane Nelson with 10 points, seven rebounds and one steal.

Freshman Beverly Slater had an impressive game posting eight points, nine rebounds, one assist while shooting 4-for-5 at the free throw line.

Junior Madison Crews continued to stay active in plays, contributing nine points and a game-high five assists. Senior Khadija Neumeyer was all over the stat sheet again with eight points, six rebounds and two assists. Juniors Julia Hanni and Whitney Meier each contributed seven points.

EOU used a strong offensive attack in the first half, scoring 21 points in each quarter to lead 42-30 after 20 minutes. The Owls pulled the lead down to as low as four points, 63-59, with 4:16 to play in the game, but would get no closer as the Mountaineers converted their late free-throw chances. EOU made nine-straight free throws in the fourth quarter to help maintain the lead.

The Mountaineer defense on the perimeter also played a key role, holding OIT to just 11.8 percent from behind the arc, shooting just 2-for-17. On the other side, the Mounties were an efficient 8-for-18 (44.4%) from long range.

Oregon Tech had three players of their own posting double figures in points. Bailey Nelson led the way with 11 points and five rebounds. Nohea Waiwaiole and Courtney Clemmer both contributed 10 points. Clemmer paced the Owls with seven rebounds.

The Mountaineers return to Quinn Coliseum next weekend on Saturday and Sunday for the Coach Mike Memorial Tournament.
