Herrud’s Last Second Lay Up Holds Off Yotes 86-84

CALDWELL, Idaho. – The reigning Cascade Collegiate Conference Player of the Week Maren Herrud's was at it again, scoring a last second basket to hold off College of Idaho's comeback attempt, as the No. 14 Eastern Oregon women's basketball won its 10th game in a row, 86-84 on Tuesday night.

After a furious comeback by C of I to tie the score at 84, the Mountaineers (10-2, 5-0 CCC) got their final possession with 24 seconds left. EOU kept the ball on the perimeter until feeding it inside to Herrud with less than 10 seconds, who then made a move to slip under the basket, converting on the game-winning layup.

The Coyotes got one attempt at a game-tying shot, but junior Kylie Smith made a nice defensive play to tip the ball out of harms way as the clock ran down to zeroes.

The Mountaineers spread the ball around efficiently, with nine different players getting on the score sheet. Reigning CCC Player of the Year and All-American guard Maya Ah You Dias finished with her second double-double in three games with 28 points and 11 rebounds. She shot 11-for-17 and added six assists and five steals in an all-around performance for the senior.

Herrud's game-winning shot capped off a 17-point game for the reigning CCC Player of the Week. Four other players scored at least seven points including juniors Madison Crews and Jane Nelson with eight each and Smith and freshman Beverly Slater with seven apiece. Crews added three assists.

The Yotes roared back late in the third quarter after trailing by as many as 15 with 8:05 to play in the third. With the score 57-42, C of I went on a 21-10 run to cut EOU's lead to just four points heading into the fourth.

The Blue and Gold did not trail after the first minute of the game, but found themselves tied in the final minute. In the fourth quarter, the two teams traded baskets until C of I tied the score for the first time with just 24 seconds.

The Mountaineers had a strong first quarter shooting, making 60 percent of their shots while leading 27-18 after 10 minutes. Ah You Dias had 11 of her 28 points, helping EOU get off to the quick start. The first quarter lead proved crucial as the Coyotes outscored EOU in the final three quarters.

Overall, both teams shot over 50 percent and 33 percent from behind the arc. The Mounties uncharacteristically struggled from the free-throw line, making 10-of-20 free throws.

The last second win for EOU kept its CCC winning streak alive, as they have won 35-straight conference regular season games. The team is 5-0 in the CCC this season after going 20-0 a year ago.

The Mountaineers will take their CCC winning streak into 2019, next playing Evergreen on Jan. 4 and Northwest on Jan. 5. However, EOU will visit Pacific on Dec. 29 to end 2018, facing the Boxers in Forest Grove, Oregon, at 5 p.m.
