No. 20 EOU Falls 35-10 at No. 8 Embry-Riddle

PRESCOTT, Ariz. – Despite wins by its three ranked wrestlers, the No. 20 Eastern Oregon men's wrestling team fell 35-10 at No. 8 Embry-Riddle on Saturday in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

The evening started at the 184 pound weight class as the Mountaineers (6-5, 1-4 CCC) dropped the first three matches to fall behind 18-0. No. 4 ranked senior Mhar Caballa then stepped in at 125 pounds, facing No. 18-ranked Joshua Nira of ERAU. In a very close match, Caballa came away with a 4-3 win by decision to cut the deficit to 18-3.

Fellow ranked EOU wrestler, junior Blake McNall, next wrestled at 133 pounds. McNall, who ranks 8th in the NAIA, earned another decision victory for EOU, defeated Collin Anderson by a 7-2 score.

The Mountaineers dropped the next three matches by decision, major decision and technical fall to see Embry-Riddle's lead increase to 30-6.

Senior Drake Randall ended the losing streak at 165 pounds, winning by a 10-0 major decision over ERAU's Carlos Apodaca.

Despite the loss, EOU battled against some of the top-ranked individual wrestlers in the NAIA. Redshirt freshman Jared Brant held off No. 10 David Salazar to a major decision loss. Freshman Keegan Mulhill fell by technical fall to No. 3 James Williams at 157 pounds, while sophomore Marco Retano also fell by technical fall to No. 6 Daniel Butler at 174 pounds.

The Mountaineers next wrestle on Sunday at the competitive CCC/GPAC Duals. They will face No. 9 Midland, along with Concordia and Morningside (both receiving votes) and Hastings. Action from Chandler, Ariz., is schedule to begin at 12 p.m. Mountain time.
