Men’s Basketball Stifles NCU in 84-75 Road Win

Box Score

EUGENE, Ore. – Facing one of the hottest team's in the Cascade Collegiate Conference, the Eastern Oregon men's basketball team played tough defense and shot well from three-point range to defeat Northwest Christian 84-75 on the road Saturday night.

The Mountaineers (7-7, 2-1 CCC) shot 50 percent from behind the arc while holding the high-powered NCU (9-3, 1-1 CCC) offense to 42 percent from the field including a low 31.4 percent in the first half.

Sophomore Jordan May continued his blistering shooting on the season with 33 points, including a career-high nine made three pointers. May played all 40 minutes and had the green light all night, taking 21 total shots in another dominant night for the sophomore.

Junior Jarek Schetzle came off the bench to pick up his second double-double of the year, grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds with 10 points. Junior Landon Jones had 12 points and seven boards while freshman Zane Wright had 10 points, which include a couple crucial three pointers down the stretch.

Northwest Christian came into the game on a five-game winning streak and owned one of the top offenses in the CCC, averaging 97 points per game. EOU had allowed 86.2 points per game entering the night, but played excellent defense, particularly in the first half, to limit a dynamic NCU offense.

The Mountaineers led for nearly the whole game, trailing only in the first 10 minutes of the first half. The team went up by as many as 19 points with 16:30 to play in the second half. The Beacons chipped away at the deficit late, but were unable to come up with the big stop against EOU late in the game.

Sophomore Peter Hamilton was all over the stat sheet for the Mounties in 16 minutes played, finishing with eight boards, six points, five assists and four blocks. Redshirt freshman Kobi Gardea had nine points and five assists.

For the Beacons, Austin Tyner posted 26 points with four steals. Reece Robinson had 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Mountaineers complete the road trip on Sunday, visiting Corban at 6 p.m. in Salem, Oregon.
