Mountaineers One Step Closer to CCC Title With Sweep Over Wolves

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. - The No. 12 Eastern Oregon Mountaineers (22-5, 17-2 CCC) move one step closer to winning a share of the Cascade Colligate Conference regular season title with their sweep over the Walla Walla University Wolves (0-20, 0-19 CCC) on Thursday night.

This is the second sweep over WWU for the Blue and Gold this season, each set ending with EOU dominating the Wolves both offensively and defensively (25-20, 25-14, 25-18). This win is one of the two final games that EOU needs to win in order to clinch a piece of the conference title, with the final game against College of Idaho on Friday. Southern Oregon currently sits with a 16-2 conference record and can also earn a share of the title.

Thursday's game was routine for the Mountaineer's as they outworked the Wolves in every facet by beating them handily in overall points, kills, aces, assists, and digs. The only match up that was close was total blocks with each team tallying six blocks.

The offensive standouts of the match were senior right side Holli Mullins with seven kills, junior outside Hailee Ackerman with six kills, and freshman right side Kaci Cox with five kills who all contributed to the teams 42 kills overall. On the defensive end, sophomore libero Kiley McMurtrey lead the team with 18 digs while also tallying seven assists. Junior outside Megan Bunn and sophomore defensive specialist Aspen Christiansen had a solid night in the backrow as they had 14 and 10 digs, respectively. The assist lead was held by sophomore setter Madison Pilon with 13. The Mountaineers held Walla Walla to a hitting average of .065 with five individual Wolves hitting less than .200.

The first set was a slow start for EOU, taking them a few points to get going. With WWU leading at 7-10, EOU kicked into gear and began their comeback by way of three kills from Mullins, Cox, and junior right side Taylor Tibbetts. Tying it at 11-11 and then again at 17-17, the Mountaineer's began to get into a groove. After a WWU hitting error and a kill by Ackerman, which bounced off the Wolves block and out of bounds, the Mountaineers took the set 25-20.

The second set sported a much smoother start than the first. With both the offense and defense working together to put pressure on Walla Walla, the Wolves began to crack as EOU forced them to make consecutive errors at the net. Capitalizing on this, the Blue and Gold took the lead early and rode it all the way until 18-10. Fighting back, the Wolves earned some points of their own making the score 19-13, but was finished there as EOU took the set after a kill by freshman middle hitter Cambree Scott and two back-to-back kills by Ackerman.

Looking for the sweep, the third set began with EOU controlling the court after two kills by junior middle hitter Allyson Crisp, which contributed to the initial four point run by the Mountaineers to start off the set. Continuing to lead at 8-3, Scott snaged a kill in right back from an assist by junior right side Nina Bailey. The lead stayed with the Mountaineer's at 16-10 forcing the Wolves to take a timeout. As the game carried on, the Wolves begin to creep back into contention making the score 19-19 after a few attack errors by the Blue and Gold. Kicking back into high gear, Mullins changes the momentum with a huge block to put EOU back on track. With a dump by senior setter Sarah Carpenter and a kill by freshman Breanna Shaffer, EOU came out victorious at 25-18 in College Place.

For WWU, Lauren Barlow and Megan Doyle led the Wolves offense with 12 and seven kills, respectively. For digs, Erika Dudar had 27 and Krista Schafer had 12 assists.

The Blue and Gold play their final regular season home game against the College of Idaho Yotes on Friday at 7:00 pm, which will also be Senior Night as the Mountaineers honor the careers of Mullins, Carpenter along with sophomore McMurtrey, who is also playing her final home regular season match.
