Mountaineers Settle for Draw at Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – On a rainy day in western Washington, the Eastern Oregon men's soccer team tied Northwest 2-2 in double overtime in Cascade Collegiate Conference action.

The Mountaineers (5-3-3, 3-2-2 CCC) played their fifth overtime game of 2018 on Friday, ending in their third draw of the season against the Eagles (2-4-3, 1-3-2 CCC).

The game was tied at two at the end of regulation, thanks to two goals by Connor Young. Young found himself on a breakaway from a through ball by Carlos Solorio, and was able to beat the goalie with a left-footed poke to the far post in the 44th minute. In the 53rd minute, Young was on the receiving end of a set-piece ball from Josh Goodman, which accounted for all EOU goals.

The contest was very back-and-forth. In regulation, EOU took the lead two separate times, but the Eagles were able to answer both deficits with scores of their own in the 51st and 67th minutes, respectively.

EOU was the clear aggressor in the overtime periods, earning the majority of scoring chances. They outshot the Eagles 13-1 in the two ten minute periods, and doubled them up 42-21 for the match.

In the 110th minute, EOU had a chance to find the elusive golden goal they needed to win. After beating the keeper, junior Alex Gutierrez found himself with a partially open net, but the NU defense was able to retreat to the goal line in time to stop the shot that would have ended the game with just seconds remaining.

Gutierrez led the Mountaineers with seven shots in the contest, followed closely by Young and Abraham Garcia with six each. Goalkeeper Aidan Wright was very active, tallying nine saves in the match.

Eastern Oregon will stay in western Washington until Sunday to take on Evergreen State in Olympia at 3 p.m. Their next home match isn't slated until a CCC matchup with Corban on Friday, October 19th.
