Kelly’s Record Day Not Enough, EOU Falls 48-24 to C of I

CALDWELL, Idaho. – Despite a program record of 281 yards receiving from senior wide receiver Brenden Kelly, the Eastern Oregon football team lost to the College of Idaho 48-24 Saturday afternoon in Frontier Conference action.

The No. 18 Mountaineers (5-3) struggled against a revitalized Coyote offense, giving up 612 total yards in the game. C of I was able to gain 252 of those yards on the ground, and added 360 through the air.

College of Idaho (4-5) has now won four straight games, after dropping their first five consecutive contests to open the season. They scored six touchdowns on the day, four coming from quarterback Darius Peterson, and two by running backs Nick Calzaretta and Dominic Garzoli.

Although the Mounties struggled defensively, they moved the ball well on offense. The highest ranked passing team in the Frontier threw for 452 yards and two touchdowns, highlighted by an 82-yard pitch and catch from quarterback Kai Quinn to Kelly. The senior Kelly finished the afternoon with an incredible 281 yards and two scores on seven receptions. 281 yards by the standout receiver breaks his own EOU record that was set Sep. 22 this season against Montana Western, when Kelly gained 265 yards.

Turnovers hurt the Mountaineers in some key spots. EOU has done very well as of late taking care of the football, but they coughed the ball up four times in this one. They were able to pick off two Coyote passes, but they still lost the turnover battle 4-2.

C of I was able to stuff the Mounties running game, which has gained over 145 yards per contest this year. EOU managed just 31 yards via the run on 18 tries. However, running back Victor Dias was able to punch one in from the 1-yard line in the first quarter for a rushing touchdown.

The Coyotes offensive line played exceptionally well against an EOU front seven that has given teams fits all year. Last week, the Mounties were able to get to the quarterback seven times and only allowed 76 rushing yards on 2.1 yards per carry. Today, the Blue and Gold recorded only one sack, and surrendered 4.3 yards per carry on a whopping 59 attempts.

Defensive back Zackary Jacobs got another interception in the contest, giving him seven on the year, which ties him for the number one spot in the NAIA. Jacobs leads all other defensive backs in the Frontier Conference by at least two interceptions.

Eastern Oregon and College of Idaho split the season series with this Coyote win. Back on Aug. 25, EOU got the best of C of I 24-21 at Community Stadium.

The Blue and Gold will look to bounce back next week in a top-25 matchup with No. 13 Rocky Mountain. The Battlin' Bears steamrolled No. 16 Montana Western 43-14 on Saturday, and will head to La Grande next week. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. at Community Stadium on Nov. 3.
