Men's Basketball Opens Season With 125-115 Win Over Bison

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon men's basketball opened up their 2018-19 season Friday night with a high-paced 125-115 win over Salish Kootenai College.

The Mountaineers were able to take the win in large part due to efficient offense and unselfish play. They shot 54.5 percent from the field, putting up 125 points. The team as a whole finished with 25 assists, led by point guard Joel Anderson who recorded seven dimes. Anderson finished the game just shy of a triple-double, accumulating 35 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.

Salish Kootenai started hot from the field, especially from behind the arc. They took a 14-point lead after 11 minutes of play, leading 38-24. SKC ended the night making 13 three-pointers on 41 attempts.
Everything was falling for both teams in the first half, combining for 123 points. EOU had a slight advantage, leading 65-58 through the first 20 minutes. Anderson led both teams with 23 points in the period.

The Mountaineers took control in the second half, and the lead grew to 25 points with ten minutes left in the game. SKC made some big shots late to try to mount a comeback, but ultimately fell short.  Anderson had a game-high 35 points, followed by junior Landon Jones with 22 and sophomore Jordan May with 17.

Bench players played a big role in the win for the Mountaineers. They outscored the Bison's bench 38-25 on the night. Guards Brock Johnson and Said Hersi combined for 27 points off the bench.

The men's basketball team plays their final game of the Quinn Classic Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in a matchup with New Hope Christian. The Deacons lost to College of Idaho 88-64 Friday night in the opening game of the tournament.
