No. 13 Mounties Upset No. 8 Oklahoma City at Day 1 of NWCA Duals

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 13 Eastern Oregon women's wrestling team split a pair of duals, which included an upset of No. 8-ranked Oklahoma City, on the opening day of the NWCA National Duals on Thursday.

The Mountaineers came away with a close 24-23 victory over Oklahoma City in the first round of the tournament. The dual was settled in the final match in the 191-lb weight class, where freshman Jacey Lindner (2-2) defeated OCU's McKyla Kerr by an 8-4 decision to give the Mounties the winning three points.

The Blue and Gold began the dual on a 20-0 run after winning the first four matches. Sophomore Lisa Megargee won by forfeit to start the day at 101 pounds, followed by three straight pins from sophomore's Cassidy Freeman (6-12) and Amber Pair (6-8) and junior Jessica DeHart (8-6).

Answering back, the Stars won the next two weight classes by forfeit and then won by fall, decision and technical fall to take a 22-21 lead into the final match. In the 155-lb matchup, freshman Alexis Cavero (17-7) fell by an 8-8 decision due to her opponent, Yvonne Galindo, grabbing the last point of the match to earn the tiebreaker. Despite the loss, Cavero picked up a valuable point for her team.

Lindner's victory at 191-lbs gave EOU three team points while surrendering just one to the Stars.

With the win, the Mounties advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament against No. 3 McKendree. The Bearcats, who received a first-round bye, were fresh against the Mountaineers who had wrestled just an hour prior. McKendree took the dual by a score of 43-1.

The loss moved EOU to the consolation bracket, where they will continue on Friday. The Mounties next face Life University at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time. Live results are available at trackwrestling.com.
