No. 7 Mountaineers Use 33-Point 1st Quarter to Win 13th Straight

SALEM, Ore. – Behind a dominating 33-10 advantage in the first quarter, the No. 7 Eastern Oregon women's basketball team cruised to its 13th-straight victory, defeating Corban 77-53 in Cascade Collegiate Conference action on Friday night.

The Mountaineers (19-2, 12-0 CCC) rolled in the first quarter as they have done all season, getting out to a 33-10 lead. The NAIA's top three-point shooting team continued its incredible season, making 7-of-9 three pointers in the first 10 minutes. A 13-0 run early in the quarter got the Mounties out to a 17-3 lead that would never fall below 14 points.

In the second quarter, the top-ranked Mounties proved that even when their shots are not falling, they could still control a game. The Blue and Gold held the Warriors (9-10, 5-7 CCC) to just 18.5 percent shooting and forced 12 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. It resulted in just 18 Corban points and a 22-point Mountaineer advantage.

Senior guard Payton Parrish had five of the team's 13 made three-pointers, leading the Mounties with 19 points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Stormee Van Belle had 18 points along with seven boards while senior forward Mariah Swanson and junior guard Maya Ah You-Dias also reached double-digit points with 14 and 12, respectively.

The Blue and Gold finished the game with 13 three-pointers, two more than their season average that ranks third in the NAIA. They also shot 46 percent from behind the arc, an improvement of three percent from their nation-leading average of 42.5 percent.

The defense of the Mountaineers proved to be tough on its opponent once again, forcing 18 Corban turnovers and limiting the Warriors to 30 percent shooting. Through three quarters, Corban shot 11-for-47, but an 8-for-16 fourth quarter helped salvage their percentage.

The Warriors hung with the top-ranked Mountaineers in the final three quarters, but a 23-point first quarter deficit was too much to overcome. Maci Bozett led Corban with 18 points, making six three-pointers.

In the win, head coach Anji Weissenfluh won her 396 game at the helm of the EOU women's basketball program, just four shy of reaching the 400-win milestone.

The Mountaineers will face a tough opponent on Saturday, visiting No. 15-ranked Northwest Christian in Eugene, Ore. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
