No. 12 Mountaineers Sweep No. 8 C of I in Top-25 Battle

LA GRANDE, Ore. – With the home fans backing them, the No. 12 Eastern Oregon volleyball team picked up an enormous sweep (25-19, 25-14, 26-24) of No. 8 College of Idaho in Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.

In arguably the biggest win of the season for EOU, the Mountaineers (14-5, 8-2 CCC) advanced to 4-3 against top-25 opponents this season and into a tie atop the CCC standings with No. 16 Corban.

"This week our focus has been on ourselves and playing together regardless of the opponent across the net," said head coach Kaki McLean Morehead. "I'm proud of how the team played in front of our home crowd tonight."

The loss was just the second of the year for the No. 8 Coyotes (15-2, 7-2 CCC) and the first against a top-ranked opponent, ending an overall six-match winning streak in the process.

The Mountaineers were strong in all phases of the match, outhitting the Yotes .313 to .093 from the floor. The Blue and Gold also led in blocks (11-4), assists (42-31) and digs (48-40) in the dominant victory.

Senior outside hitter Amanda Miller smacked down 14 kills on 31 attacks to pace the EOU offense. Sophomore outside hitter Megan Bunn added an efficient nine kills with a .615 hitting percentage.

Senior middle hitter Madisen Garlie, who continues to lead the NAIA in blocks per set, posted another seven blocks to lead the front line. Senior right side hitter Isabelle Statkus added five block assists.

The freshmen setter combo of Madison Pilon and Abby Smith continued to show improvement at the midway point of the conference season, as Pilon put up 20 assists followed by Smith with 19.  Freshman libero Kiley McMurtrey led EOU with 12 digs while senior Malia Mills recorded nine.

On the Coyotes' side, Ashley Pagan finished with a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs. Drew Dobney led the team with 17 assists. While the College of Idaho suffered its first sweep of the season, the Yotes were playing without CCC leading setter Marija Djonovic and one of the team's top hitters in Brenna Meehan.

The Mountaineers next play at home in one week, hosting Oregon Tech on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. They follow up against Southern Oregon on Oct. 7 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be a part of Eastern Oregon's Homecoming Weekend.
