EOU Advances to 4-0 in CCC with 3-2 Victory Over Providence

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women's soccer team used a second half goal off a direct kick by junior defender Chelsey Nicol to defeat Providence 3-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play on Saturday at the EOU Soccer Field.

"In the first half, I thought we put ourselves in tough spots but we stayed calm and battled back," said head coach Jacob Plocher. "In the second half, we did a much better job of controlling the play and were able to create some very good chances. One thing that I really love about this team is they compete until the end and never give up."

The opening 15 minutes were full of a flurry of goals as the Argonauts (4-4-0, 3-3-0) scored the first one of the match by Eme McLaughlin in the sixth minute. Just over five minutes later, EOU (5-2-1, 3-1-1) knotted up the score on freshman forward Camie Edgington's first career goal with an assist by senior forward Anna Roslander.

It didn't take long for Providence to reclaim its lead, however, as Sydney Knieriem tallied her fourth goal of the season on an assist by Malena Lennon in the 14th minute. Once again, the Mountaineers answered with the tying goal, this time by Natalie Mitchell in the 15th minute for her fourth of the year.

After things settled down, the Blue and Gold kept possession and opportunity numbers in its favor, leading 12-5 in shots by halftime. The final 45 minutes were all EOU, as the Mountaineers took 18 shots, including nine on net, while holding the Argonauts without a single shot.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Nicol stepped up with a booming shot off a direct kick that sailed into the back of the net over the arms of Argonaut goalkeeper Dakota Neumann.

EOU kept up the pressure in the second half looking to add onto their lead, but Neumann was tough to beat, making eight of her 15 saves down the stretch for the Argos to keep the Mountie lead at one.

The Mountaineers had nine players with multiple shots as they took 30 as a team in the match. Senior midfielder Yasmin Mookerdum led the way with five shots and three on goal. Mitchell added four shots while Roslander, Nicol, sophomore forward Nan Kiebert and freshman midfielder Korilynn Goller each had three shots.

The win advanced the Mountaineers to 4-0 in CCC play to start the season, with all four wins coming at home. They go on the road in conference action for the first time this season on Oct. 6 at Southern Oregon in Ashland, Oregon. They follow up on Oct. 7 at Oregon Tech in Klamath Falls.
