LA GRANDE, Ore. - Senior forward Anna Roslander's 80th minute goal sealed the Eastern Oregon women's soccer team's first Cascade Collegiate Conference win of the season in a 2-1 victory over Northwest on Friday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (2-2-1, 1-0 CCC) used two second half goals to earn the comeback victory over Northwest (4-5, 1-2 CCC) in their regular season home opener.
Northwest opened the scoring early in just the seventh minute of the match. Sharaya Roberts punched in a loose ball in front of the net after a corner kick. Stephanie Wilson drew the assist as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles maintained offensive pressure throughout the first 45 minutes, leading 13-4 in shots and 6-1 in shots on goal at halftime. The 1-0 lead was not enough, however, as EOU took control in the second half.
Just 60 seconds out of the break, junior forward Natalie Mitchell netted her second goal of the year to start a brand new match with 44 minutes on the clock. EOU continued the pressure with an 8-5 lead in shots in the second half.
The Mountaineers piled on the scoring chances in the second half until Roslander broke through with her first goal of year in the 80th minute. The Eagles pushed back for the final 10 minutes, but the EOU defense and goalkeeper Cydni Cottrell held tough to capture the 2-1 victory.
Cottrell made five big saves in the first half to keep EOU within a goal, tallying seven total saves for the match. Her counterpart, Kat Sanchez, made two saves for the Eagles.
Mitchell led the Blue and Gold offense with five shots and the game-tying goal. Whitney Weaver had two shots for the Eagles including two on net. Northwest led 18-12 in shots and 8-4 on net.
The Mountaineers next host Evergreen on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Live statistics and video will be available at eousports.com.
