Pelayo’s Goal Lifts EOU Men’s Soccer Past Whitman, 2-1

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – With only 10 minutes remaining in regulation, senior midfielder Jesus Pelayo broke the 1-1 affair collecting the eventual game-winning goal over NCAA III institution Whitman Friday afternoon at Whitman Athletic Fields.

It was a back-and-forth battle in the first period that saw both teams combine for a total of four shots. The Mountaineers caught a break just seconds before the intermission due to an own goal on the side of Whitman. EOU headed into the locker room leading 1-0.

In the 53rd minute, senior forward Fredy Rodriguez nearly gave the Blue and Gold a one-goal advantage but his header shot was saved by the Blues' keeper. Nine minutes later, Gabe Jacobson put the home side on the board, knotting the game at one.

The Mountaineers continued to battle having several shots blocked inside the following 15 minutes but finally broke through as Pelayo's shot found the back of the net. Senior forward Julian Wells was credited with the assist. It proved to be the dagger as the Mounties would go on to hold the Blues to just one shot over the final 10 minutes of regulation.
