EOU Men’s Soccer Drops its Final Non-Conference Game to Whitworth, 4-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – The EOU men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Monday afternoon at Pirate Park after dropping its final non-conference contest to Whitworth, 4-1.

"I want to give Whitworth the credit they deserve, they were the better team in the full 90 minutes of play today," said head coach Kenny Huber. "We had just as many opportunities as Whitworth but couldn't finish our chances this match, but that's the game of soccer and that's what makes this game fun and frustrating at the same time. We'll learn to fix our mistakes as quickly as possible this week and take what we've learned this preseason into our first conference game against Warner Pacific on Saturday."

Junior keeper Aidan Wright was tested early in the box as he came up with the first save of the game in the fourth minute mark. Senior midfielder Julian Wells nearly netted the equalizer inside the 13th minute tick only to be denied by the Pirates' goalie. Wells' shot was the only one on target the rest of the first half.

The game changer in the first period came off an EOU (3-1) foul which promptly awarded the Pirates a penalty kick which Jonah Snyder tallied for the home side at the 25th minute mark.

It was a busy first half for the referees as it proved to be a physical one with a total of 15 fouls whistled in, EOU recorded nine, including two yellow cards. At intermission, Whitworth led, 1-0.

Junior midfielder Josh Goodman got the Blue and Gold up on the board five minutes into the second half tallying his first career goal as a Mountaineer and first of the 2017 campaign. The Pirates responded seconds later after the kickoff to go back up 2-1.

Staying on the constant attack, junior midfielder Steven Beaudry kept the flurry of shots going one minute later but Whitworth's keeper Jesus Nunez came up with the gloves. Snyder netted his brace in the 67th tick to extent the WU lead, 3-1.

Towards the final 12 minutes of regulation, the Mountaineers recorded three shots on frame that were saved, while the Pirates broke it open with their final goal in the 81st.

In the losing effort, Wright departed the match playing 86 minutes, recording three saves for EOU.
