Women’s Soccer Opens 2017 Season in California

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon women's soccer team begins the 2017 campaign on Monday, playing two matches in California on Monday and Tuesday.

Under the leadership of new head coach Jacob Plocher, the Mountaineers look to make their third straight appearance in the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament.

It does not get much more difficult than the Mounties' season opener on the road at No. 3 Vanguard in Costa Mesa, California. EOU battles the 2016 national quarterfinalists at 12 p.m. on Monday.

The Mountaineers will also take on Hope International on Tuesday at 12 p.m. in Fullerton, California as part of the road trip.

The Blue and Gold begin the season with four non-conference matches before opening CCC play on Sept. 16 at Warner Pacific. The Mountaineers then host No. 8 Northwest on Sept. 22 for the home opener.

Plocher brought in a large recruiting class of 14 for the 2017 season to help bolster an already impressive roster.

The defense expects to be strong once again after allowing just 0.78 goals per game in 2016. Junior defender Chelsey Nicol leads the back unit after receiving NAIA Second Team All-West Region honors and being selected First Team All-CCC last season. Joining Nicol on the backline includes returning starters senior Rosalie Salisbury and sophomore Josee Bassett.

Offensively, the Mountaineers return their top scorer from a year ago in junior Alexandria Cuaresma. The Kona, Hawaii native, paced the team with five goals and 13 points in 2016 and was selected Second Team All-CCC for her efforts. The team also brings back top-scoring threats in seniors Anna Roslander and Mariana Madrigal.

Over the offseason, EOU graduated goalkeeper Jessica Parker who started 13 games in 2016 and led the team with 49 saves. The Mounties have plenty of option in net with returners senior Cassidy Watkins, junior Val Gaffney and sophomore Cydni Cottrell while bringing in transfer Gisela Lopez
