EOU Softball Drops Opening CCC Tournament Game to C of I, 5-2.

SALEM, Ore. – Looking to defend its 2016 title, the fourth-seeded EOU softball team was ultimately doomed by a five-run fourth inning produced on the side of the fifth-seeded College of Idaho, in the opening game of the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) tournament presented by U.S. Bank, Saturday morning.

The Blue and Gold held the Yotes hitless through three innings and jumped on the board first in the top half of the fourth. Junior third baseman Chelsea Spanier singled up the middle, setting up junior right fielder Maryssa Santi for the RBI double as she would advance to third on an error. Consecutive pop outs would end the inning with EOU leading 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth is where the Yotes broke open the game producing five runs on three hits including four errors from the Mounties. Trystin Crofts' bases-clearing single highlighted the frame for C of I as the Yotes claimed a 5-1 edge.

In the sixth, Santi laced an RBI single, making it a 5-2 ballgame. The Mounties put runners in scoring position in the seventh but a couple of fly outs and a strikeout sealed the victory for C of I.

Junior pitcher Hailey Kline (15-9) picked up the loss allowing six hits on five runs, all of which were unearned.
