Valiant Effort From EOU Softball Comes Up Short Against OIT

SALEM, Ore. – After being put in an 8-1 hole through five innings, the EOU softball team nearly completed a comeback for the ages when senior first baseman Cheyenne Barker's grand slam made it an 8-7 contest in the elimination game of the 2017 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament, presented by U.S. Bank.

EOU 7, OIT 8
The Owls of Oregon Tech jumped out to an early lead posting crooked numbers in consecutive innings. In the top of the third frame, OIT produced three runs on four hits. The following frame, they followed it up turning four knocks into four runs. Senior pitcher Haylie Van Laethem would come in for relief, as junior pitcher Hailey Kline exited after three innings of work.

Senior designated player Lauren Burchak led off the bottom of the fourth with a single –  it marked her 100th career hit dawning a blue and gold uniform and the Mounties first hit of the afternoon. Two batters later, senior Lacy Usabel – pinch running for Burchak – scored on a sacrifice fly courtesy of junior second baseman Kasidee Lemberger. After four, EOU trailed 7-1.

After OIT responded with one run in the fifth, the start of a ferocious rally for the Blue and Gold would commence in the bottom half of the sixth.

Juniors Chelsea Spanier and Maryssa Santi kicked the inning off with back-to-back singles. Senior catcher Alex Shuster smacked an RBI single up the middle and two batters later, senior center fielder Taylor Gerlach's base hit to right tacked on another. Following suit, junior shortstop Lena Richards laced an RBI hit to cut into the Owls' lead, which was now 8-3.

With the bags now loaded and two away, Barker dug in and launched a grand slam over the right field wall. It was the senior's 14th blast of the year and fourth roundtripper against OIT this season. Her home run put her in a tie for the most in a single season (Megan Platz, 2008).

EOU held off the Owls in the seventh and looked for one more rally in the bottom half. Spanier led off the inning reaching on an error, but that's all that would come as the Owls forced a grounder and a couple of pop flies to stave off the Mountaineers' comeback attempt.

With the loss, EOU caps off the regular season with an overall 28-19 record, including 17-10 in conference play.
